“Latch,” Disclosure’s first single from debut album Settle, was released in the UK on 10/08/12 — about 21 months ago. The album itself came out 05/31/13 — about 14 months ago. And when we named “Latch” one of our favorite songs of 2013 — more than seven months ago — we were already noting how old it was. But thanks to factors including Disclosure’s victory lap summer festival tour and a massive music industry push behind “Latch” singer Sam Smith, the song is only just now peaking in America. After seeing stateside release in February, it recently ascended to #7 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart, becoming Disclosure’s first American top-10 hit. Thus, ahead of this weekend’s Outside Lands appearance in San Francisco, they landed in L.A. with Smith in tow to perform their biggest hit. It was a triumphant spectacle, with Smith exuding the sort of star power I once believed he didn’t have in him. Watch below.
Disclosure play the Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas this Wednesday and will open for Kanye West at Outside Lands in San Francisco on Friday — hopefully with an assist from Smith.
