Watch The Black Lips Call In To Mock Gene Simmons On Huffpost Live

Gene Simmons was the guest on HuffPost Live yesterday and did a live Q&A with online viewers. The Black Lips called in via webcam covered in black-and-white face paint a la KISS and mocked the singer. Band member Jack Hines said, “We’re here to tell you that the day of misogynistic, sexist rock’n'roll is over! We call for the complete and utter surrender of the Kiss Army. Lay down your guitars! Do you accept our terms of surrender?” Simmons looked pretty confused and came back with this retort: “Yes. I surrender entirely. And I wanted to compliment your mom for the wonderful way that she designed the decoration on the basement she lets you live in. I think it’s very attractive. I hope you get to leave your mom’s basement soon. Remember: learn to speak English.” When the host told Simmons that the Black Lips were a successful rock band, he replied: “But they’re not black. What are they? Racist? Why are they calling themselves black?” The Black Lips haven’t commented on what their video was a reaction to but earlier in the same show Simmons, who moved to the US from Israel when he was eight, made some remarks on immigration that pretty much boiled down to, “Learn to speak goddamn English.” Watch video below.

  1. Sounds like a beef to me. OWWWOOOOOOOOOOO!

  2. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the dude from Black Lips have some less-than-enlightened things to say about hip-hop earlier this year? I seem to remember him having to “clarify” his usage of the word “ratchet” at some point. Just sayin’.

    • “Just sayin’” is short for everything I just said is of no value, no?

    • I thought the Black Lips guy was pretty accurate when calling Lorde “naive”. But I’m glad Lorde didnt get too much backlash over “royals” cuz she is too young to handle all that.

  3. I think they’re responding to Simmons when he was on this Fox News show called Outnumbered talking about misogyny, where he made comments like:

“If opening the door means you get special treatment, we want to treat you special. We want to treat you like the princesses you are… If anything, if you were a princess, EVERYBODY would open doors for you! You’d walk through, and — I don’t want to do the joke, but — [puts on falsetto voice, waves hand like beauty queen], “We are arriving!” You’d want all the doors to open, and why not?

You know, if you take a look at history, you’ve been treated badly, you haven’t had equal job opportunities, for God’s sake, the vote hasn’t been yours for that many years in the first place! Why not open the doors?”

Deconstruct that as you will but he seems to think that women should appreciate doors being open for them because their special, instead of not appreciating it because it makes some sort of statement about a woman’s ability to open a door or tries to suggest that it’s improper for a woman to open her own door if she wants, or open a door for a guy or whomever if she wants.

  4. “successful” is used lightly here. I also really hate Kiss so good for them although Simmons’ momma’s basement joke burned them pretty hard or something

  5. Gene Simmons and Kim Kardashian have something very unique in common.

The sound of their voices makes my angry immediately. I don’t know what it is. Gene is always so smug. And Kim is always so…well, Kim.

  6. I really like one of the Black Lips albums, and I think a lot of KISS songs are timelessly catchy. But the Black Lips guys come across pointless in their mockery. And poor Gene Simmons seems a little senile or something, he is really old, sad.
