“Like 10 years ago could you ever picture Miley Cyrus talking about her gender fluidity and having her tits out?”

…..no, because she was 12 years old in 2005.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a Deadmaus song and I am not his target audience, so I’m sure it doesn’t matter anyway. But what an obvious prick.

Dude insults others unprovoked, and then when someone points out that it makes him an asshole, he goes off on these wounded histrionics about how his “complexes” aren’t anyone else’s business. Then maybe you should shut the fuck up about them and keep other people’s names out of your mouth? Absolutely the worst type of human being.

ASAP Rocky would’ve been a much better example. Really, almost any other popular rapper would’ve been a better example.

The argument that American culture condemns sexuality but glorifies violence has been circulating in the public consciousness since before Miley was born. I don’t see why her use of the “Bad Blood” video as a recent, high-profile example of this hypocrisy should be interpreted as a personal swipe at Taylor, especially when the Mirror takes care to present these quotes with as little context as possible.

These two may seem like polar opposites in terms of their public personas, but they have more in common than most people realize, and I can guarantee that the entertainment press is far more eager to start beef between Miley and Taylor than either of them are.

This reminds me of a couple of weeks ago, when I was watching American Sniper with my 10-year old cousin (I know, inappropriate for kids his age, but he’d already seen it…). He was more freaked out at the sight of Sienna Miller in lingerie than the appearance of a fucking DISEMBODIED HEAD and a DEAD BODY SUSPENDED ON A HOOK in a later scene. I’m not sure to what extent that’s a reflection of our society’s twisted relationship to sex and violence, but it was jarring to witness.

It also reminds me of Perfume Genius’s stunning video for “Hood” initially being taken off YouTube for content… despite having no full nudity, just two guys embracing in their underwear. (I’ve been SMDH at that one for years.)

In any case, this hardly qualifies as “a shot against Taylor Swift,” mostly just Miley observing one of society’s weirdest and most hypocritical attitudes.

I don’t really even like Miley that much (“Party in the U.S.A.” notwithstanding, that song is perfection) but she makes a valid point. “Druggie whore” is a stereotype applied to tons of women in pop culture nowadays–Kesha, Miley, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, etc.–that has no male equivalent. Sexually active guys in search of a chemical fix aren’t demonized at all to the same extent as women who do the same.

It is 2006. We are in an Episcopal church sanctuary. Joanna is on the stage at her harp. As she plucks the final note of “Sawdust & Diamonds,” it hangs in the air like a gossamer thread suspended for a moment in a ray of light. The audience holds its breath. From the last pew, dansolo yells, “Play old stuff!”
