Roof Doctor – “Abyssal Plane” (Stereogum Premiere)

Roof Doctor were at the forefront of Philadelphia’s musical resurgence with their 2014 album, Mobile Freedom Home, a collection of downbeat but motivational twangy rockers that led us to name the four-piece a Band To Watch shortly after it came out. Two years later, they’re back with a new EP, My Band, and a folkier, more plaintive sound. “Abyssal Plane” floats in like a warm breeze, Mark Harper’s smooth voice cozying up against daydreaming guitars and a carefree attitude. “Wake me up and I’ll go back to sleep again/ I don’t wanna be another working man,” goes the central conceit, and the rest of the lyrics echo that concern of not wanting to be suffocated and tied down by the day-to-day grind.
