Mawwage … mawwage is what bwings us togetha today. The new Rilo clip’s got Jenny under the veil, then walking down the altar, then doing her best Runaway Bride. Cast opposite her is Blake as the groom-to-be (Johnathan Rice is there, although as his time with Faye Runaway showed, he and Jenny have an ’understanding’), jilted and left to walk alone through the reception with a now-I’m-gold coin. All you that had mixed emotions about the backup singers, the smoothness, etc. … sorry, the gag’s all here. But hey Jenny’s in wedding dress/Blake’s in a tux, so, maybe a little less to complain about? Everybody loves a wedding.

Maybe it’s me, but this video is much creepier than the new Animal Collective one.

Dude, you are creepy. Try the lame attempt at snark elsewhere.

  3. Jenny sounds like Kelly Clarkson towards the end.

  4. Is Blake really the same size as Jenny? Wow…that might make him what…like 5’2?

  5. jessiedoll61  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007 0

haha! kelly clarkson? i dont think so.
i love this song. i really do! but this video is stinky. this video doesn’t seem like a good match for this song at all. I read somewhere that Jenny teamed up with her friend AND director- Autumn de Wilde- for the video. This proves you should never do business with friends!!! Yikes.

  6. anon  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007 0

Autumn de Wilde is awesome! And yes, Blake is that small. I think they’re both barely 5 ft tall.

  7. ko  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007 0

    blllooooooowwwsssssss

  8. jessiedoll61  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007 0

Hmmm maybe she should just stick with photography then. :D

  9. Blu  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007 0

    2:35… aaaaand she’s off!
Now maybe all those male rk fans will think twice when they yell “Marry me, Jenny!!” while in her presence.

  10. Dave  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007 0

My band opened for the Elected a few times and I can report that Blake is like 5’1″, also, he is super super nice.

  11. I didn’t at first, but after seeing this video, I really, really like this song.

  12. Jeremy  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007 0

The album overall was kind of disappointing IMO, but this is probably the best song on the album. I liked the video also.

  13. Carlos  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007 0

Are you all saying that it’s a crappy album because it’s the “in” thing to say? Fucking elitists. This is a great album; bands change — get used to it. It’s a fantastic pop record.

And I’m not even a RK fan.

  14. stefan  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007 0

This video really isn’t that bad. The best part is jason boesel going to town on that triangle.

As for the album. I mean take it for what it is, a pop record. Everyone is like “It isn’t a rilo kiley record!!!”. It is barely poppier than take offs and landings. And just a poppy as the frug. So I agree with carlos.

  15. Carlos, it’s opinion based, but I think it’s a horrible pop album. And that’s coming from an RK fan that wouldn’t hold it against them if they did change it up a bit.

  16. Stephen  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007 0

Jenny Lewis. Low cut dress. Running. Slow motion. I see nothing wrong with this video.

  17. mob roulette  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2007 0

Is that opening guitar lick reminiscient of George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” or what? That’s so meta, it makes my head hurt.

  18. seth  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

she really does sound like Sarah McLachlan in this song. doesn’t look much like her though. that’s all i got.

  19. Dw Dunphy  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

Oh, Vinny, Vinny, Vinny. I’m creepier than you’ll ever know. And older. And more tired. If you’re going to call me out on a lame attempt at snarkitude, at least try to show me how it’s done. Don’t slap me with your glove & call me mean.

And the guitarist in the band has committed suicide at the end of the video. That’s not creepy? I’d hate to see what you’re serving at you Labor Day BBQ.

It’s official: Jenny Lewis is the hottest pop singer so far in the new century.

“Are you all saying that it’s a crappy album because it’s the “in” thing to say? Fucking elitists. This is a great album; bands change — get used to it. It’s a fantastic pop record.”

no, apparently it’s the in thing to be completely rude and disrespectful to people who don’t like the album.

seriously, get the fuck over it already. why are you so threatened?

  22. Alia  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

Kelly Clarkson + Shania Twain = Boring, Lame Album.
(That’s my kind of math rock)

  23. Great song, not so great video and even worse album.

  24. Lauren  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

Overall I think this album’s kind of wack but I love Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis’s past music so I’m giving it a second, third, etc. try’s…I actually like this song more after watching the video. (My favorite part is also the grass and triangle-playing part. Fyi Autumn DeWilde (among many others) worked a good deal with Elliott Smith) Seeing Blake and Jenny go down the aisle together made me wonder if they were playing out this role since they once were together and maybe at one time were going to get married. This also made me think of Jenny singing in “More Adventurous”: “i wanna say i will/as my last testament/for me to be saved and you to be brave/we don’t have to walk down that aisle”. I think I’m gonna look for nuggets to enjoy from this album just ’cause I appreciate so much all of the music that has come from these folks before!

  25. nancydrew77  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

Jenny Lewis is very talented. Guys just can’t say a women’s talented so they focus on her looks.

  26. Sean  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

Again, I think the album is very disappointing, this song included. The video is fine I suppose. Nothing special. jenny looks good in the dress. I miss the old Rilo Kiley though. The one that wrote good songs.

  27. Greg  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

I like this album. It is good for the first half and then fades a little bit toward the end. Lyrically it is strong throughout.

Is that a guy from Maroon 5 at the 1:49 mark?

  28. historyman68  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

Am I alone in thinking the video is perfectly appropriate for the song? They convey the same bittersweet feelings, and the song is a perfect soundtrack to the story… the only sour note is the Rushmore ripoff with the swimming pool.

  29. Dave  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

No “November Rain” comments? I kept waiting to see Slash hiding underneath the reception table.

  30. Alan Knut  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

This video makes the song more heart breaking due to Jenny and Blake’s previous relationship. Everyone, remember Jenny’s claims of “I’ve only been in love once”. Methinks that is Blake.

  31. Carlos  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

“no, apparently it’s the in thing to be completely rude and disrespectful to people who don’t like the album.

seriously, get the fuck over it already. why are you so threatened?”

Because everyone would be all over this album had it been produced by Timbaland or the likes. It’s rock hypocrisy — “I love Nelly Furtado but I can’t digest a completely light, completely good pop record.” Horrible attitude unfortunately popular — I don’t know if you share that thought, but most of the posters here do.

  32. Leland  |   Posted on Aug 23rd, 2007 0

I’m gonna say that “Rushmore ripoff” probably goes back a little further to ‘The Graduate.’ It’s like, totally an homage. And stuff. A movie you have no excuse for not seeing.

  33. jullianne  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2007 0

this is a sad stupid video…full of cliches and disappointment. the song goes no where

  34. ave  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2007 0

excellent video. i love it. the video kind of ruins the happy-vibe i had of the song though. kind of tough to be all light and free about it when you can picture blake drowning himself.

  35. Someonebored  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2007 0

I think that the video…is odd. I mean it’s okay. But seriously people, I don’t want to sound like an idiot but, stop hating on Rilo Kiley. You know, it’s true, “Because everyone would be all over this album had it been produced by Timbaland or the likes. It’s rock hypocrisy — “I love Nelly Furtado but I can’t digest a completely light, completely good pop record.”" Seriously. I like the song, I like the album, I like Rilo Kiley. Sue me, fools.

  36. Dw Dunphy  |   Posted on Aug 24th, 2007 0

I enjoy the album for what it is, but what it is is a fantastic debut, not an album made by people who have been in the game for a decade now.

If there is any actual gripe against the CD it is that all of the strengths from their previous work are not seized upon as assets. Mostly, they’re avoided. I’m not going to be pretentious or anything by saying I’ll rid myself of this new Rilo Kiley. I enjoy it. It’s good. But make no mistake about it – it’s nothing that a huge budget, a moderately talented American Idol, The Matrix and maybe Glen Ballard at the board couldn’t have conjured.

I just expected the next level, not the stars, but certainly not the start.

Everyone who loves the record is right. Everyone who hates the record is right.

Oh, and everyone who kind of likes it….is right.

Please learn to respect opinions, I think that’s how RK would want it anyway.

  38. I hated this song on first listen, but it’s now totally grown on me. Cute video too.

  39. Shoreline-  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2007 0

    I love this song.
And I think that it’s cute that her and Blake are in this video about to get married,
Even though Jonathon Rice is in the video.
I thought it was different from their other videos, yes,
    I think they’re trying a new approach.
And it’s not working out as well as planned.
But Rilo Kiley is Rilo Kiley.
And I love Jenny to pieces.

Does anyone know if this song is about Blake?
It kind of seems like it huh?
Cause when they were going out,
    She was his “silver lining”
    And now she’s “gold”

I think it’s cute how she says “hurray, hurray, I’m your silver lining.”
    Hahaha.

“Everyone who loves the record is right. Everyone who hates the record is right.

Oh, and everyone who kind of likes it….is right.

Please learn to respect opinions, I think that’s how RK would want it anyway.”

Respect for opinions does not mean they are “right”. Opinions can’t really be right or wrong, however their basis can be.
Everyone saying the album is bad is consistently giving the same reasons why they think so. Most all of those who like it are merely saying “well I thought it was good”, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a poor showing. There are a few “it’s a good pop record, get over it” lines, but what does that even mean?

I haven’t found a good discussion on this album yet, mostly just dismissals and counterattacks. I’ll take a page from C.S. Lewis here, paraphrased: “No one likes bad art. There are those who like good art and there are those who are uninterested in what good art is.”

Lookin’ forward to the “Breakin’ Up” video. One of the best tunes of the year, I humbly decree.

My roomie hears echoes of Aimee Mann in Jenny’s voice.

The album is not revolutionary, but I wish this was the kind of stuff that ruled the pop charts, not that I know what does these days.

  42. Rebecca  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2007 0

This is sooo un-indie of me to say, but I’m such a sucker for ex-shipper stuff like this. Reminds me of Gwen and Tony in “Simple Kind of Life.”

I had no idea Pinsky was so small. Aww!

  43. Abe Lincoln  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2007 0

Oh man, I would love to collect those hairs from Jenny’s hair brush glue them to my chin as my permanent goatee.

  44. the mercy fox  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2007 0

the dude jumped into a pool not off of the newport bridge, i don’t think it was a suicide.

  45. “the dude jumped into a pool not off of the newport bridge, i don’t think it was a suicide.”

Well, he is very very tiny.

Aww. Now I feel bad. I think Blake’s sexy (lack of height and all).

  46. jenny  |   Posted on Sep 4th, 2007 0

this album is horrible. sorry. it is.

  47. carolyn  |   Posted on Sep 13th, 2007 0

I saw Rilo Kiley earlier this week in Denver and during the last song, Blake hopped off the stage into the crowd and continued to play. He was right next to me and he is pretty damn short, but that’s okay. He is still sexy (and I wouldn’t run away from the alter)

Love the video, love the song, love everything RK!

  48. pete  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2007 0

SILVER LINING, Is a heart felt ballad. Rilo Kiley, sings it from the heart. Video/NO Video, this is a wonderful song. All women who have waited on a man, raised kids, done the housework, washed, ironed, ran all the errands alone, cut the grass, carried groceries, took the kids to all school activities, took them to dance, piano, football, cheerleader practice, mostly alone and without praise from their husbands, will be the ones who understand the lyrics; not teenagers who are the ubiquitous listeners, who have time to judge things they haven’t yet experienced.
Before you judge a Black Hole event horizon, try to understand how a black hole in space, comes into being.

  49. FunkMagician  |   Posted on Feb 26th, 2008 0

I’m a huge Rilo Kiley fan, but I also thought the album wasn’t good. I’m not an elitist. I love The Frug. I’ll frug all day damn it. It has nothing to do with the fact its more poppy, just that it seemed lackluster. But maybe I’ll give it another listen, as I also have just gained a new appreciation for this song. I will be humming it all day.
