R.I.P. Mikey Welsh, Former Weezer Bassist

Former Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh passed away in a Chicago hotel room over the weekend. Welsh was with the band during the period after original bassist Matt Sharp had left the band, appearing on The Green Album and playing on Weezer’s subsequent tour. He left the group in 2001, citing a mental and physical breakdown, and began to pursue painting. Strangely, according to NME, he had posted a (now-removed) tweet that read “dreamt i died in chicago next weekend (heart attack in my sleep). need to write my will today” on September 26, weeks before his death. He was 40 years old.

  1. I think they should have left the tweet. How uncanny. ; /

  2. The tweet is still there, actually…

So f’in spooky. If it is determined that it actually was a heart attack in his sleep, well, it might cause me to rethink all of my basic beliefs.

But I’ll probably just be freaked out for 30 seconds on keep going through the motions. Sigh.

  3. RIP Mikey. I hope you left that Glorious Day with a Smile and found your Island in the Sun. I hope it wasn’t a Knock-down Drag-out affair, and the media won’t run a sensationalist story about you speculating whether or not a Hash Pipe had anything to do with it.
