Kim Gordon & Thurston Moore Separate

Sad news from Sonic Youth camp. This statement comes via Matador Records:

Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment.

Kim and Thurston have been married for 27 years ago and have one daughter, 17-year-old Coco Hayley Gordon Moore. Fans are sharing condolences on sonicyouth.com. Here’s the couple being interviewed in ’91…

…and Kim on Gossip Girl in 2009, officiating the wedding ceremony of Lily and Rufus:

We’ll always have Goo. Share your favorite SY track in the comments.

  5. a terrible hit strikes today, a terrible hit for the parade.
i don’t beliiieve in rapture, babe

  6. Kim and Thurston live near me and it’s not unusual to see them around town. I guess I should have became suspicious when I spotted Thurston buying a bunch of new furniture at the local IKEA a few weeks ago…

I hope for Coco’s sake, it’s not a messy split. I saw her band open for Yuck, and Thurston was there in the crowd being her biggest fanboy by recording their set on his iPhone (albeit, doing weird shaky things with it while walking up to audience members and zooming in and out of their expressions as they watched the stage.) Depending on which parent she ends up living with, this could mean the end of her young band, too.

  7. “The Eternal” my ass…

    • as per request… favorite songs, in no particular order, “Mote”, “Titanium Expose”, “Stones”, “‘Cross the Breeze”

  8. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sonic Youth just kept touring and releasing album without Kim.

    • I may be in the minority but I’d understand a “last album” from these guys followed by a retirement. I would argue they’ve been far more valuable in their recent years than R.E.M. but both bands were formed in ’81 and they both said what they needed to say. I don’t think anyone in 1986 would have said Sonic Youth was going to become an establishment.

On the marriage itself; it really is sad, but we don’t know the specifics understandably. I imagine the two will always share a certain love for one another; you can’t erase 27 years of friendship no matter how hard you try. I hope they continue to be amicable and I’m sure it is a bittersweet thing having all their fans right there with them.

    • Why do you say without Kim?! It’s her band too.

    • Oh, nobody got it. I KNEW they were married, I was just kinda suggesting whether or not it mattered. I doubt these two are like your typical middle-class, suburban married couple, going to try and get leverage over one another and not talk to each other unless their kids’ birthday was happening or something. They seem like level headed people who just grew tired. I doubt this means anything close to SY breaking up and I doubt they have any hard feelings for each other. I believe in mutual break ups.

  10. Jack and Meg kept on going! Come on, stay together for the kids!

  11. My favorite SY track was Cotton Crown, but now I’ll never be able to listen to it the same way again…

  12. damn divorce really fucks up things for the kid if its before they leave for college.

  13. I would have to say that in case Kim and Thurston just couldn’t continue playing together, Sonic Youth should just call it a career and move on. I would rather have memories of SY as the band that it has been for the past few decades than a SY without either Kim or Thurston. It would be like The Beatles without either Lennon or McCartney

  14. I dont know either of these people bu they look like a perfect couple.
Perhaps they need to smile a bit more.

  15. At least we still got Grohl to keep 90′s alt grunge alive.

    Yeah…..

    #AllMyIdolsAreDead

  16. This is like the indie rock version of when Al and Tipper Gore divorced.

  17. Damn! They should rename the band “Sonic Old”

  19. I remember being a teenager and making a small batch of 12″ noise records (really small, like 20), and i woke up to a paypal order from thurston moore. it justified my entire life as a slacker.

  20. Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Cobain, Winehouse, all dead at 27, and now we can add this too. gone too soon. R.I.P. rock n’ roll love.

  21. Sigh, at least we still have Yo La Tengo…

  22. Who gives a fuck.

  23. Wait, they were cojoined twins?!

  24. It could be a new chapter for SY … Kim an Thurston weren’t together back in 81, the both went through a string of boyfriends and girl friends respectively, having seen the piece with Yoko its clear that they are both still focused very knowledgeable and fairly balances individuals… probably more so that a lot of people there age. At the end of the day Love is Love sex is sex and not really love. Human being can over come many things. More importantly all kids want their folks to be happy even if they separate or get divorced. Love is the only thing most us will ever have. Those 2 still have the love for themselves.

Love is all we got !!
