Titus Andronicus - "In My Place"

A couple of months ago, we posted a list of the 10 best Coldplay covers. That list is safe. New Jersey punk rock champions Titus Andronicus recently posted an intentionally ramshackle, lo-fi cover of “In My Place” on Twitter, and holy god this thing is awful. It’s awful on purpose, but it’s still awful. Also, I don’t remember that part about taking a dirty shit in the original song. Listen below.

Hey, you were warned. In slightly less unexpected news, members of Titus and the So So Glos, performing together as the Shea Stadium All-Stars, also posted a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days,” and it’s done with a bit more reverence, or at least less obvious hatred. Listen to that one here, also via the Titus Twitter.

  1. Stickles was on a hot streak this weekend on Twitter, taking aim at The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, and this was just the exclamation mark at the end of it.

  2. I hate it when bands do covers that sound exactly the same as the original. If I wanted to hear the Coldplay version of the song I would buy a copy of their album off of the Apple iTunes internet digital music store.

  3. They say the best karaoke is bad karaoke. So… yeah.

  4. Great cover versions have the ability to transform even a mediocre song into something charming AND new. Florence + the Machine’s covers, for instance. They work only because of a minimum guilty pleasure in and a compositional respect for the original: you should like it or leave it. But this one failed to be funny even in an ironical way. Ouch.

  5. This is so much more enjoyable when I imagine they are singing to a framed photo of Amy Klein.

  6. This brings tears to my eyes… So beautiful…

  7. This cover isn’t very funny. What’s the joke? “Coldplay’s such a terrible band that it would be SOOOO ironic if we cover them and do a super shitty job of it.” I don’t get it. Are they starved for attention? Not a Coldplay fan; I’m just annoyed at Titus for being so unfunny. They must think that they are THAT much better than Coldplay for doing something like this. Not cool. It was nice when punk bands at least had the aesthetic right so it was possible to enjoy a cover ironically but this isn’t even funny. Shit/lo-fi does not equal punk.

    This sounds better than Coldplay.
