Lana Del Rey

Well, this is a pretty good sign that something has transcended all our little blog arguments and moved toward mass acceptance: Lana Del Rey will be the musical guest on the first episode of Saturday Night Live of 2012. She’ll show up on the 1/14 episode, which Harry Potter (or, fine, “Daniel Radcliffe”) will host. May her performance go better than Jessie J’s did.

Born To Die is out 1/30 via Interscope. With this American TV debut Lana is in the exceedingly rare company of acts to play SNL without even having a debut full-length to their name, including … well, any Saturday Night historians out there want to help us with the rest of that list?

  1. Vampire Weekend booked SNL I believe the right after their debut came out or the week before. The hype between them and Lana is somewhat similar.

    • Wait, “I Stand Corrected” — VW didn’t get their SNL gig until March of ’08. I was thinking how they managed to nab SPIN Magazine’s cover with the title “The best band of 2008… ALREADY?!” in January or February.

  2. Lana would be so mich better if she didnt have this obscene hype and (obviously) obscene management behind her. Without that there’s no way her single and this would have happened. She was realising music under her own name then…oh suddenly her name changes and she’s thrust upon us? she’s good but, overhype much? it will be the death of her….maybe

  3. “Well, this is a pretty good sign that something has transcended all our little blog arguments and moved toward mass acceptance”

    Is it?
Or is it a sign that someone’s pouring a lot of money into this product?

By the way, Stereogum has had 25 stories on her already, before that debut. That’s nauseating.

  4. Natalie Imbruglia was the first performer to ever debut on SNL before releasing a debut LP in the States.

  5. Publicist Of The Year!

To put it in perspective, LCD Soundsystem never played SNL.

    • At first I was like “hey that’s kind of sad” but then I remembered all the amazing acts I’ve seen on SNL in recent years…Ke$ha…Jessica Simpson’s equally-or-less-talented-sister…Michael Buble…Katy Perry…Lady Antebellum…

Not that they always book garbage pop acts, but…definitely they usually book garbage pop acts.

  6. Here’s hoping she goes the way of Jessie J.

  7. “on the first episode of Saturday Night Live of 2012″

charles barkley and kelly clarkson host jan 7

  8. Is LDR less or more fictional than Harry Potter?
