Regina Spektor - "All The Rowboats"

It’s been nearly three years since we’ve gotten a new album from incisive piano-pop great Regina Spektor, but she’s lately been promising both a revamped website and a new LP called What We Shaw From The Cheap Seats, recorded with producer Mike Elizondo and due sometime after the weather gets warm again. Today, we get our first taste of the album in the form of the razor-sharp new track “All The Rowboats.” Stream it below; it sounds pretty great on first pass.

    • Yup Regina Spektor all your talent and music is no longer needed because a few other artists are doing the same kind of thing. Might as well stop making music right?

      • I agree it wasn’t a very fair comment to make. I’m a bit put off and angry at the music news scene at week’s beginning for a few reasons, so poor Regina got the unwarranted brunt of my frustration. Sorry Regina fans!

      • Back to your response, though Tom and having taken in the above track — Regina Spektor in my mind has always been fairly and very obviously derivative of piano-based female musicians before her (Kate Bush and Tori Amos in particular.) Being perfectly honest, she makes music that is neither offensive nor anything all that special / innovative. I don’t think pointing that fact out deserves to be downvoted at the level which it has, and only goes to illustrate the inanity in people’s response to reading a comment that finds them at a crossroads with someone who respectfully doesn’t like something which they do is to downvote them into oblivion (There have been much scathing things said about Lana Del Rey.) Okay, that makes perfect sense, despite the fact that aside from you, Tom, no one has come forth to argue why they believe Ms. Spektor’s music is deserving of attention in a time when similar-sounding female songwriters such as Florence + The Machine and Adele seem to have monopolized it, hence this isn’t adding any variety to the mix. If you ask me, this sounds very similar to her previous work (which has never strayed too far from the formula to begin with) and will likely make its way on a future episode of Private Practice. I personally prefer female musicians who are pushing the boundaries of songwriting in much more interesting ways with each subsequent release (PJ Harvey, Joanna Newsom, Zola Jesus, Chelsea Wolfe come to mind) but that’s just me. I like change, and while this is comfortable listening (that’s a compliment,) it doesn’t excite me or prompt me to look at music in a different way. Hopefully that helps you understand my brief quip above.

        • I can see where you’re coming from. I agree that this sounds very similar to her previous work and right now there are a lot of female musicians out there dominating.
          But seriously? A couple of powerful females on the radio and that’s enough? I don’t think there can ever be too many talented female musicians and songwriters. The more the merrier, in my opinion. I’ll take Regina over Katy Perry any day.
          And I don’t think you can lump all those female artists together and say they’re the same and that’s enough. All the females you’ve mentioned are all very different and all have a unique musical contribution. Florence and Adele are the powerhouse singers but Adele’s music is more sparse and light where Florence’s is big and full. Fiona’s music also tends to be sparse but her lyrics are more honest and raw. Joanna Newsom is quirky and full of imagination.
          And I think, yes, Regina can be repetitive and this new song isn’t a huge departure but lyrically, she’s the storyteller. No one tells a story like she does. And she plays the piano with such life and range that it sounds like 4 different instruments. She’s the singer who’s willing to yelp like a dolphin in a song or imitate the “boom” of a drum. And that’s what sets her apart from the rest and makes her return welcome. That’s what makes her necessary.

          • It’s not so much that I think there is a quota of how many female singer-songwriters there should be out there, but rather you’re talking to someone whose opinion shouldn’t matter since this type of music isn’t my specialty (A quick lookover of my blog, you’ll quickly find that I tend to concentrate on punk, noise, hardcore, and if I ever do delve into pop such as this, it’s innovative pop like the artists I mentioned above who offer a new face to the sound.) Since I dug my own grave, I’m more than happy to explain my point of view, though, and to be quite honest, I’m proud that my comment has incited the response it did. As they say, “If you can’t stand up for something, you’ll fall for anything.” And Regina, I’m not falling for your same trick for the upteenth time.

          • Looks like karm covered everything I would have said, and you (micael_) seem to have deflated your own argument in your last statement. so I’ll leave it at that. but I would only say that if I downvote your original comment, it’s because i disagree with it, and not simply because i think no-one else should have a differing opinion.
