Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – “Shoot A Hole Into The Sun”

Last year, Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds released their self-titled album, Gallagher’s first post-Oasis project, and it was a collection of solid, slightly-more-psychedelic variations on the old Oasis formula. But Gallagher also promised another new album, this one a collaboration with the Amorphous Androgynous, an offshoot of the veteran ambient-house crew the Future Sound Of London. Today, we hear the first fruits of that collaboration.

“Shoot A Hole Into The Sun” is a spaced-out eight-minute reworking of the High Flying Birds single “If I Had A Gun.” It’s not full-on electronic or anything; there’s plenty of acid-rock riffing in there, and nothing that you could quite call a dance beat. But it’s still a fun departure for Gallagher, who sounds pretty great in tripping-balls mode. The track will appear as a B-side to Gallagher’s new “Dream On” single, out 3/11 on Sour Mash. It’s not quite “Setting Sun,” but it’ll do. Stream it at YouTube.
