At least in theory, SXSW is supposed to be about discovering emerging and ascendent bands, but the fest just keeps adding big names: Bruce Springsteen, Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, John Mayer, T.I., Nas, the Shins, and — now — Jay-Z, arguably the biggest name and best live performer in rap history. Last year, Jay was a surprise guest at Kanye West’s pretty-great G.O.O.D. Music extravaganza. And this year, he’ll have the stage to himself on Monday night — before most of the music people show up — for some sort of American Express-sponsored show. As MTV reports, Jay’s set will be live-streamed on American Express’s YouTube page. No venue has been announced yet. Good luck getting in!

  1. No offense, Hova — I’d rather be losing sleep at something like Stereogum’s all-night party with a bunch of scraggly-faced scuzz rockers than be stuffed into a room with a bunch of shirts and ties from American Express finding out that Jay-Z brings it no matter where you put him. I already know.

  2. It’s at the ACL Live @ Moody Theater… more information here http://www.brooklynvegan.com/austin/2012/03/jay-z_confirmed.html

  3. What time?? So ACL Moody Theater? Next to the W Hotel?? Okay…Maybe I could hear it from down below outside??

  4. hmm. I feel torn about this. by a huge acts like J (or any of the above mentioned large acts) playing they’re basically stealing the spotlight from a lot of smaller acts that happen at the same time, which seems to go against what the idea of what sxsw is about……or was once about
