Joanna Newsom - "Instrumental 1999"

Over the weekend, Drag City posted a previously unreleased Joanna Newsom track called “Instrumental 1999″ which — get this — is an instrumental track put together in 1999. During that period, Drag City notes, Newsom was “newly armed with a driver’s license and a Dodge Caravan” and “making waves in the greater Tahoe-area wedding-music circuit,” so if you want some context, you’re going to have a hard time finding better details than that. The Caravan makes a ton of sense with the harp though — someone should do a sketch about that! Oh. Download the track below.

Will “Portlandia did it!” become the new “Simpsons did it!” for music-based sketch comedy? Time will tell.

  1. It’s pretty, but not as pretty as it would be with her voice singing along with it.

  2. I’m not hearing the Prince influence at all.

  3. Thank you for making this trip to Stereogum not entirely about Lana del fucking Rey. JNew is magic
