Thom Yorke’s Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes has reached 1 million downloads, according to a blog post on Bittorrent’s website. That number also includes free downloads of the single “A Brain In A Bottle” and its corresponding video. Bittorrent downloads of Yorke’s new album do not count towards the Billboard charts, at least not yet. In Billboard’s Pop Shop podcast, director of charts Keith Caulfield explained that “those responsible for selling the album did not choose to report those sales to Nielsen SoundScan,” which is the company that provides Billboard with the data they use to create their charts. According to Caulfield, Radiohead did the same thing when In Rainbows launched with the pay-what-you-want model, though the album did eventually chart when it was released through traditional channels.
