DJ Q-Bert already revolutionized turntablism, and now, oddly but excitingly, he seems to be doing the same for album art. The jacket sleeve for Q-Bert’s Kickstarter-funded double-LP Extraterrestria/GalaXXXian is being hailed as the world’s first interactive album cover. As you can see in the video below, it basically functions like a tactile soundboard or a MIDI controller, with Q-Bert’s fingers tapping and gliding across the artwork to trigger sounds on Algoriddim’s DJay iPhone app via Bluetooth using Novalia’s Printed MIDI technology. It’s pretty amazing, so watch.

Extraterrestria/GalaXXXian is the follow-up to Q-Bert’s 2001 debut Wave Twisters. Doug Cunningham and Jason Noto of Brooklyn-based Morning Breath and Q-Bert’s media management company Thud Rumble collaborated on the cover. The album features guest spots from Chad Hugo, Kool Keith, Del the Funky Homosapien, and cellist and trombonist Dana Leong among others.
