Cabane – “La Gomera” (Stereogum Premiere)

Cabane La Gomera

Cabane is technically the latest project of Belgian composer and songwriter Thomas Jean Henri, but he functions more as a hub for the various spokes that are involved. Bonnie “Prince” Billy (Will Oldham) doesn’t collaborate with just anyone, so his presence here is a big co-sign, and Kate Stables — one of our new favorites — is also involved. Today we’re premiering “La Gomera,” the B-side to “Sangokaku,” and it is an equally tranquil song named for one of Spain’s Canary islands. On each of these, Cabane’s greatest strength lies in the balance between rustic, fingerpicked acoustics, and complex, sophisticated string arrangements done by Stereolab’s Sean O’Hagan. Both songs are threaded with an undercurrent of sadness and loss — but there’s also a sense of quiet resignation. It feels like the mood that descends after a particularly fulfilling vacation comes to an end. Listen below.
