Screw the endless debate over vinyl vs. digital. Clearly, the medium of the future is tortilla. (The sound is so warm and delicious!) Inspired by a joke video of a tortilla on a turntable that went viral, Youtube user Rapture Records decided to turn that dream into a reality by making a real, playable record out of a tortilla. He experimented with a few songs including the “Macarena” and Taco’s “Puttin’ On The Ritz,” but the best tortilla record plays an extremely lo-fi but still audible version of “The Mexican Hat Dance.” Check it out below via The Daily What.
If you’re interested in learning to make your own tortilla records — and why wouldn’t you be? — there are instructions here. All you need is some audio editing software, a laser cutter, and a flour tortilla. And if you’re interested in eating your own tortilla records, here’s some advice: “The tortillas are edible, but taste rather burnt where the laser has to work harder to slice apart the edges. Of course, cooking them removes the possibility of playing them.”
