Maryn Jones’ approach to songwriting is a holistic one; when she sings about emotional distress, she embodies it, describing the way that small anxieties might manifest themselves on her physical body. All of Jones’ lyrics travel through her circulatory system and spill out of her mouth, and her voice catches and tears on particular revelations. On “How Long,” Jones questions her unwillingness to seem vulnerable. She told The FADER that all of the songs on Kicking Every Day are “a way for me to talk about the things I wish I could talk about with everyone I love… Really, though, they are thing I want to say to myself.” This particular song’s chorus hangs on the devastating line: “Only you will let me in, when I’m tearing off my skin.” Listen below.
