King Midas Sound is already a collective of sorts, featuring the trio of former journalist Kevin Martin (better known as dance-dubstep producer the Bug), vocalist/poet Roger Robinson, and vocalist Kiki Hitom. Given their eclectic interests, it should come as no surprise that they’ve decided to release four collaborative albums with various other artists. The first of those is simply titled Edition 1 and is a collection of their work with Austrian experimental producer and guitarist Christian Fennesz.
Martin spoke to Crack about the goal for the series of albums:
We both wanted the process to work quickly, like a set of instantly impressionistic sketches or sonic polaroids, which wouldn’t be bogged down by the slowness of an industry or the slowness of me as an obsessive-compulsive producer.
Listening to the ever-shifting ambience of the album, I’d say they’ve achieved that goal. Stream it in full below. “Waves” is a standout, as is the rather chilling album closer, “Our Love.” (Not to be confused with Caribou’s tender track of the same name.)
If you live in the UK, King Midas Sound and Fennesz will be performing together live at the Ninja Tune-curated Clock Strikes 13 event on 10/30. More details on that here.
Edition One is out 9/18 via Ninja Tune. Pre-order it here.
