Hear Sam Smith Cover Amy Winehouse’s “Love Is A Losing Game”

Sam Smith’s own material is largely tepid, but he’s got a hell of a voice and he puts it to good use on his cover of Amy Winehouse’s “Love Is A Losing Game,” which he debuted on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show. Smith’s probably one of the few in the pop music game right now that can do even a little bit of justice to Winehouse’s immense pipes, so it feels like a natural pairing.

“I saw the film recently and, sometimes, people forget my age,” he said on the show. “I was 11-years-old when Frank came out […] and that album has really shaped me as an artist and my views on music and my relationship with music lyrically. Seeing that film brought me back to that moment of being 11-years-old — her rawness on such beautiful chords, on such expensive chords.” His version was recorded during the sessions for Drowning Shadows, the deluxe reissue of his debut album that’s out tomorrow.
