Japanese Breakfast – “Everybody Wants To Love You”

What makes Psychopomp, Japanese Breakfast’s upcoming debut, such a remarkable album is that a song like the grief-stricken “In Heaven” can hang effortlessly next to “Everybody Wants To Love You,” a song that sounds as joyous as the exclamation that inhabits its title. That deep loss and potential gain — they’re really two sides of the same coin. “Can I get your number? Can I get you into bed?” Michelle Zauner starts out by asking. “Will you lend me your toothbrush? Will you make me breakfast in bed? Ask me to get married, and then make me breakfast again.” It’s a song filled with the warmth of hope and possibility that comes from finding that somebody who loves you, and the trade-off refrains of “Everybody wants to love you” that come from Zauner and Radiator Hospital’s Sam Cook-Parrott, who guests on the track, makes it feel like it’s going to happen for all of us.
