Wolf Prize – “Baby Blue” (Stereogum Premiere)

Last year we posted “Come Home,” a gorgeously creeping guitar ballad by LA trio Wolf Prize. Now the band is preparing to release their Desired Things EP, and we’ve got another demonstration of their slow-burn beauty. “Baby Blue” almost entirely comprises spectral keyboard chords, minimal high-register guitar, and magnificent swells of bass that spring up to envelop the chorus. It’s all held together by barely-there percussion and a nimble, Björk-reminiscent vocal melody, and that’s really all it needs. This is a band that knows exactly what they’re doing, one capable of capturing attention by doing less, not more. Here’s some background on the song:

Baby Blue
Was inspired by someone who I love deeply traveling alone in a foreign country
And how at times they may have been cold or wanting to dance with no one to share Rhythm and heat with
I created Baby Blue as a time machine from my heart|a breathing blanket with a pulse

Desired Things is out 5/17.
