Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard is a proud and vocal fan of the Seattle Mariners; he’s immortalized Ichiro Suzuki through song and thrown out more than one first pitch. Nevertheless, you have to imagine that Gibbard would’ve been psyched to hear his own song echoing around America’s oldest baseball stadium. Josh Kantor, the organist at Boston’s Fenway Park, recently busted out a rendition of Death Cab’s “Soul Meets Body” — during a game against the Mariners, no less. There’s video:
Kantor, who also plays keyboard in the Baseball Project, has made a hobby of playing indie rock songs during Major League games. Here he is playing the Replacements’ “Here Comes A Regular”:
And here’s his version of Sugar’s “If I Can’t Change Your Mind”:
It’s pretty mind-boggling that “indie-rock baseball-stadium organist” could be someone’s niche, but it’s 2016, and all things are possible.
