Hear Selena Gomez Sample Talking Heads On New Single “Bad Liar”

Selena Gomez appears to be going through a new-wave phase, which is fun to think about. Earlier this year, for the soundtrack of the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why, the pop titan covered Yaz’s synthpop classic “Only You.” Today, Gomez has released her new single “Bad Liar,” a dizzy song about an unspoken crush. And the whole thing is built around the bassline from the Talking Heads’ classic 1977 single “Psycho Killer.”

Gomez worked on the song with songwriters Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels. And talking to Variety, Tranter explains how the Talking Heads sample came to be: “Selena and Julia are Talking Heads-obsessed. So when we all got together in one room, Julia suggested, ‘Why don’t we just write over the bassline from “Psycho Killer?”‘ And we were all going, ‘That sounds great!’… The beat was just very minimal and left plenty of room for the top line to grow. It was like a starting place, then it just felt so good, it became the thing.”

Tranter also says that former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne heard the song and approved the sample: “He heard it, loved it and approved it, which was a pretty crazy moment for us. To have David Byrne listed next to our names is just so cool.”

Here’s the song:

The “Bad Liar” single is out now on Interscope, and it immediately joins Trick Daddy’s “Sugar (Gimme Some)” on the list of the best songs to randomly feature a Talking Heads sample.
