Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry Calls For US Politicians To Respond To Mass Shootings

Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry is a native of Scotland, but she lives in the US now, and like most of the country she was disturbed at yesterday’s deadly mass shooting in a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. In a new video message, Mayberry reflects on a school shooting that occurred in her hometown in 1996 — known as the Dunblane Massacre, it’s the deadliest shooting in British history — and remembers the stricter gun control measures that resulted. She calls on US lawmakers to follow suit with practical steps to prevent future mass shootings rather than the response we’ve become accustomed to, the offering of “thoughts and prayers” without a single preventative measure to go along with them.

“I was just a kid when the attack in Dunblane happened,” Mayberry says. “I didn’t go to the primary school where it occurred, but I remember it, and I remember what happened afterwards: Britain changed their gun control laws.” After calling out Donald Trump and Mike Pence by name, she concludes, “Prayers are not what stopped moral atrocities like Dunblane from happening in the United Kingdom. Gun control did.” Watch her two-minute speech below.
