You know that Split Enz “I Got You” video where Neil Finn’s aggressive eye contact makes you a little uneasy and brings out the needy, stalker vibes that don’t quite come through on account of the song’s poppy chorus? His eyes provide all the emotion. Well, he does that again in the video for his new track “Back To Life,” but this time he’s looking up at the gods, his eyes unwavering, demanding, faraway.
Finn is teaming up with his son and our Band To Watch alum Liam for the first time to release Lightsleeper. Earlier this month they released the album’s debut single “Back To Life,” and today it has a video.
Again, it’s all in the eyes. The father-son duo remain intense and serious throughout the video, mirroring the lyrics’ longing pain of absent friends, pleading that they come back to life. With a star-studded cast featuring Mac DeMarco, his girlfriend Kiera, Weyes Blood’s Natalie Mering, Connan Mockasin, and Kirin J Callinan, the video exists in a dramatic and ethereal Grecian atmosphere. There are togas, laurel wreaths, bows and arrows, a smoke machine, and a gold-encrusted harp strummed by Liam. I’m sure there are a lot of other Greek allusions I’m missing here. Find them below.
Lightsleeper is out 8/24 via Inertia Music and [PIAS]. Pre-order it here.
