Grizzly Bear/Feist @ Town Hall, NYC 6/12/07
The only thing our text-buddies asked as soon as Feist’s charming, mostly superb set at Town Hall concluded last night was “Did anybody from Broken Social Scene turn up like last night?” The answer was no (although had Kevin Drew joined lovely Leslie on a rendition of “Lover’s Spit,” as he did Monday night, we may have been verklempt too) — and though we did get the “Sky Choir” on “1234” (consisting of some presumably local kids and openers Grizzly Bear), the night’s special treat was Ms. Feist herself.
Bathed in deep magenta lights (with string lights stretched across stage overhead), the Feisty crew started things with “Honey Honey,” the first of nearly all the Reminder tunes we’d hear on the night. Things stayed mellow with “So Sorry,” but once she dipped into the one-two shuffle of “My Moon My Man” the vibe loosened. And it stayed that way: Leslie told a ghost story only to have the specter (a blonde tap dancer) come out during the next song; the band bird-whistled; Feist air-guitarred to a loop of her own axe; and most excellently during a song break, some dude’s “I love you!” confession from the crowd was met with an equally bass-voiced “I LOVE YOU TOO” from one of the band members (see, he was a guy too, and that was funny).
There were sing-alongs and clap-alongs, a soul-stirring “Intuition” and a rollicking “I Feel It All,” but until her take on the traditional “Sea Lion Woman,” the crowd resisted getting too involved, instead sinking into the Town Hall seats and letting Leslie do the lifting. And sure, some of the tunes get to be a little latte-light, and the stretches between tunes can lag a little, but her silken vocals and effortless adorability are the draw. Got there a little late for Grizzly, but their Yellow House essentials sounded ace as always, and Ed handled his guitar dropping out during “Knife” masterfully (after the requisite “Oh shit!” mid-song, of course). And, that one dude who clapped when Dan Rossen introduced his cover of “Deep Blue Sea”: we salute you. More pics after the jump.
