...and then you shoot your cousin was my favorite album of 2014, fight me
Though I liked the last two, I can sympathize with this opinion. Playing the Angel is one of my favorites in their discography, though; I don't really hear that as a "by the numbers record".
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa??? This came out of nowhere!
Cool to see 84 Nash repped on Stereogum! Band for Hire is great; that album and the Herschel Savage/American Flag album from around the same time make me wish Rockathon were less of a niche concern. And I've been meaning to listen to Connections for like 3 years now; looks like it's time.
I opened the page and immediately just ctrl-f'd to find Pinkshinyultrablast, so I'll drop off here to say Grandfeathered is definitely in my top 10. Also, to keep it just to albums no one's brought up yet, the new Besnard Lakes and Bob Mould albums are also way up there for me. Also, Brian Eno's The Ship and the Babyfather record, if only because it has "Deep" on it.
I thought the album was coming out on the 24th?...
There is no way my expectations for this are going to be anything but impossibly high after that debut. 37 minutes I don't think I'll ever get sick of.
That Jenny Hval song is SO GOOD. And I recently went back to that Meshes of Voice album she did with Susanna and that is one arresting record, too.
Exactly. It pains me to know that this album is going to have to bear the weight of serious tragedy, but I loved Push the Sky Away so much I can't help but be intrigued to see how it's followed up.
I've sort of been a casual fan of Death Grips for the past few years in that I'll give a listen to whatever they put out and pick out the best three or four songs for regular rotation later on, but wow. This one is front-to-back bangers. Really impressed.
Can't listen to the song at the moment, but, >"all its amazing key shifts" I KNEW I wasn't the only one who thought that was the best part of In My Dreams!
This may be my favorite thing they've dropped since "No Type", if only because it sounds like it could have been on Rodeo and I can't resist anything that sounds like it could have been on Rodeo.
Between this and Kanye's performances, seems like last night's SNL was just a Black Excellence overload.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Even if the record is just a rebranded Pollard solo album, this announcement makes me so so happy, mostly because there might be more forthcoming tour dates and I may finally get to experience a GBV live show. Also, the last three times Guided by Voices went on "hiatus", the "comeback" records were Vampire on Titus, Mag Earwhig, and Factory, all of which are great. So I have faith that the name's being resurrected for good reason.
Pumped for this. Fragrant World was way, way, WAY underrated IMO. If this is only the second track on the album it sounds like it'll be a trip.
I'm never, ever one to complain about these sorts of lists since I realize it's all so subjective, but it is truly baffling to me that Lupe Fiasco isn't even in the top 50. Tetsuo & Youth is honestly on par with Kendrick, for me.
I think Centipede Hz, like the Age of Adz before it, made me realize just how much of a sucker I am for artists who write great pop songs and then just throw a bunch of crazy screwed up sonic noise all over them. Like, I get the hate, but all the things people criticize about that album are the things that I love most about it. I dunno.
Fourth of July got the same remix treatment on the Exploding Whale 7", and honestly there are times I feel like swapping it out for the original when I listen to the album in full. I'm just really partial to Age of Adz on a sonic level, although I do think this remix isn't quite as satisfyingly soul-crushing as the original.
Let England Shake = Album of the Decade, just in case anyone forgot
I needed something like this to happen to lift my spirits today. Looks like I'm going to be spending the rest of the day blasting this and enjoying all the angry tweets from "real hip hop" fans who can't believe this exists. #tybg
ARE YOU KIDDING ME FIRST PFARMERS AND NOW THIS!? BLESSINGS ON BLESSINGS ON BLESSINGS
So turns out those 4 reference tracks are just each song's hook and no more than three or four other lines (except for 10 Bands) recycled into the actual songs, three of which weren't even meant to be commercially released, the other of which is R.I.C.O., which it's now obvious Drake all but 4 lines of. And now there's... this. Glad I can stop caring about this beef and get those five minutes of sleep per night back.
Wait a minute, are people really not hearing this? That was like, the first comparison that came to mind on my first listen through Wildheart. This makes total sense. "Leaves" is different enough to be a great song on its own merits, though.
"Rap isn't music" - @thedavidcrosby OK, I'll admit that I had the same opinion when I was, like, 10 years old and wasn't allowed to listen to any secular music, so maybe I can see... "I'm not trying to convert you. I'm not even a big hip hop fan. But there's definitely artistry in it. But Kanye defo sucks." - @02CRMBL "#macklemore" - @thedavidcrosby. Come on, man.
Rather than air my grievances with this list (no Tetsuo and!? - ugh, never mind) I'll just drop off here and say that that Young Fathers album is brilliant and that the Built to Spill record snuck up on me in a major way. Did not expect to love that one so much.
YES YES YES YES YES YES THANK GOD
Yeah, as a POC male (albeit a straight one) the bit about emotional/conceptual music definitely rubbed me the wrong way - you'd think someone talking in the parlance of identity politics wouldn't paint with such broad strokes with regard to something so subjective (and anyway, it's not like the divide is as rigid as he makes it out to be*). While I can get a lot of what he's saying, especially the bit about the over-intellectualization of music, hooking your personal aesthetic opinion onto the political/ideological issues at hand is kind of an iffy move to me. Also, while the GFOTY comments were definitely tone-deaf and she was rightfully called out, comparing them to Ten Walls' actual, straight-up disgusting homophobia seems way off base. But good on him for initiating discussion, I guess? I don't know, I can't really muster up the strength to care about this story beyond that. *since we're talking about PC Music, see "Laplander"
I feel like Wayne's been on a streak of strong singles/features since at least "Believe Me", so is this really that surprising?
Actually, kind of, yeah. It doesn't pack the emotional punch of Benji, but the musical switch-ups and the sprawling song structures are my bread and butter. Which is even more frustrating, because at this point I'm starting to get worn down by how many musicians I enjoy seem like total assholes.
Just looking at it gives me this overwhelming need to go listen to Low for some reason.
Menomena's Moms is still my favorite record from 2012, so if Danny Seim's songs here are like, half as good as they were there, this should be one for the books.
I honestly can't even tell who or what he's trying to mock at this point
Does anyone even know how many surprise album releases we've been blessed with since, like, m b v? I've nearly given up counting at this point.
I've played this song so much more than anything else so far this year. I don't get it.
Don't know why I was expecting to not like this, but this is actually great. The abrupt ending makes it sound like it'll be setting up something massive on the album, so excited for that too.
Honestly can't remember the last time a new album clicked so completely for me on first listen as this album. Maybe The Terror back in 2013. Having Lupe, Joey, B&S, S-K, Decemberists, Wu-Block all in queue is just icing . And now Bjork's new one is out and agh... today is just too much.
I'll still defend Folie a Deux to the death, but nowadays... I just don't know, man.
