Why is there not more hype on this record?! Maybe we've just been bombarded with too many huge records this year. November/December releases can definitely suffer for that I'm so excited to hear the whole thing
I ADORED the new Panda Bear, it's officially in my top 3 of the year (1)Grimes 2) Panda 3) Sufjan) but I agree Grimes should've received a higher score - it's more unique AND more approachable In a weird way I'm almost glad P4k underrated the Grimes album, because the fact is Art Angels *IS* so divisive for some reason, and for the people like us that understand it and love it, it feels more special in a way Can't wait for the "Kill v. Maim" video..
That Pitchfork review was crap. It sounds like they wanted it to give it a higher rating but were too worried about whether this album is "cool" or not "while "Easily" suggests that Kesha co-writes should be in Boucher's future." (•_•) <) )╯nuh uh / \
Well done Michael. And not that this matters, but what. a. BABE
Please someone kindly explain the "Grimes as midwesterner" thing you guys have going - As a proud Canadian I'm extremely intrigued I want in the tree fort too
Disclosure - Settle 9.1 I'd love to see Art Angels compete with the boys at a solid 9.3 I had high expectations for this, but it's better than I ever thought it could be just way way up there in the stratosphere
Despite unintentionally becoming entrenched in our dubious hype machine, she’s risen above it and is now manifesting her fucking destiny ! Dansolo’s comparison to hodgepodge 90’s albums like Bjork, Beck, (maybe even Bran Van 3000 lol) is apt here, as Art Angels is absolutely eclectic but anchored by Claire’s craftmanship and sense of melody. It’s just as perfect for headphones vacuuming as it is blasting on a road trip down the Pacific Coast Highway I fucking love it
Just wanted to reminisce about seeing Grimes play a seedy bar in Halifax, Nova Scotia at 2pm in the afternoon in 2010 "You've Come a Long Way, Baby" indeed : https://www.dropbox.com/s/9l0mhucu4gmwu9f/DSC00317.JPG?dl=0
** 2pm in the AFTERNOON. casual synth fun at a seedy bar : you've come a long way, baby : https://www.dropbox.com/s/9l0mhucu4gmwu9f/DSC00317.JPG?dl=0
In 2010 I saw Grimes play in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Kanada) at a tiny bar at 2pm. She was wearing purple pajama bottoms, and she was fiddling around with her mixer making interesting little synth jams and trilling her voice. I was intrigued - my boyfriend HATED it and left half way through haha. As an introduction to the Grimes persona it was slightly underwhelming, but every time she released something awesome, as the years went on, I thought back on that moment as a measure of how far she's come. Despite unintentionally becoming entrenched in our dubious hype machine, she's risen above it and is now manifesting her fucking destiny ! Gorgeousness Bands like Purity Ring, Chvrches etc have been moving way closer to a mainstream POP sound but for me this is by far the most successful crossover attempt yet This will throw some fans off guard, but she is manifesting her fucking destiny
Not Ontario - Edmonton, AB (or Halifax, NS) Hi we're Canada, we know you're states! Bye!
Yeah. Here we have one of the most massive collaborative songs of the summer, a joyous communal song that brought SO many people together at parties, clubs, roadtrips... Which is why it really is kind of sad that the video is just three dudes hanging out by themselves
Too bad "Dissassociative" didn't make the list. It's my favorite Manson song. In an old music blog post I wrote this : "Marilyn Manson was and still is an easy target for ridicule and criticism. In the 90’s he took rock ‘n’roll clichés to dizzying heights, but one of his greatest achievements is his undeniably fun and addictive, glam-rock masterpiece Mechanical Animals. “Disassociative” is of the most memorable songs on the record, referencing a time in which Manson was provided with Ketamine in the summer of ’98. A shimmering guitar line courtesy of Twiggy Ramirez rides a clean 808 drum machine, over a mournful bassline while Manson laments “The nervous system’s down again.” Then the chorus blazes a beautiful chem-trail, including one of the best lines on the record “I can never get out of here / I don’t want to just float in fear / A dead astronaut in space” after which Manson gives us a “3, 2, 1..” countdown to when the song erupts into the stratosphere." Love that whole album
I'm very interest in revisiting House Arrest, Doldrums and want to thank you for shining a light on his older, lo-fi material. That said, I'm totally perplexed how those records can outshine Before Today, his most powerful collection of songs and WTF - pom pom?! If you're not a fan of that record, I'm not sure you're qualified to write this column. I know that's a ridiculous thing to say, but it's his most accessible, most fun and most Ariel Pinkish record to date - you might want to give it another spin
Did Katy Perry just fly away on the "The More You Know" star?!
I'm not sure where to drop this anymore, but I did my annual dropbox of Pitchfork's 100 "Best" tracks of 2014. I'll just leave it here with a plate of cookies and milk : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/myv80s3nj2dmn65/AADGBZCKyIK0F4TAtTvDN38Va?dl=0
I might have already found my fav album of 2015. It might seem like a trivial thing, but I had to rewatch the ending a few times to make sure they WERE holding hands. I think it's the sweetest gesture. Incredible video too
The early 80's VHS aesthetic will never get old for me. It's gorgeous and so appropriate when paired with the music
"Something shitty happened to me / Something shitty happened to me.." *finger-tap solo* Hope someone has some good ambient records and a stereo for the hospital room. Get well soon!
"Candy Says" It really is heartbreakingly gorgeous
OH. MY. GOD. this is beautiful. "Drive" - it just slays me. Hey kids, rock 'n' roll, nobody tells you where to go
I'll go ahead and join the chaos : 10 Mac Demarco - Salad Days 09 Aphex Twin - Syro 08 How To Dress Well - "What Is This Heart?" 07 Perfume Genius - Too Bright 06 fka Twigs - LP1 05 Ariel Pink - pom pom 04 Todd Terje - It's Album Time! 03 The War On Drugs - Lost In The Dream 02 A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Sea When Absent 01 Caribou - Our Love
Good list guys. I always appreciate checking out a few albums I've never even heard of It would have been nice to see A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Sea When Absent That one blew me out of the water
also, I can't hear "Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam" without getting teary eyed - it's so poignant. I know it's selfish to think, but if only he stuck around to create a few solo albums in the same vein, or even if he had collaborated with Michael Stipe, like they had planned before heroin got in the way. Thanks for the write-up
in the Heavier than Heaven biography it was pointed out that Cobain chose to decorate the stage with easter lilies - I find it so fascinating that he created this beautiful, but very funeralesque atmosphere - how appropriate and haunting. in the same biography it mentions that initially Kurt was sad after the taping. to quote: "...he was saying he was “a shitty guitar player” and “No one liked it” and “They just sat there silently.” There was a lot of assurance to go around, which Cobain wasn’t buying. But as he was getting into his hotel elevator at the end of the night, he seemed, for a moment, to accept that he’d pulled it off, asking: “I was really fucking good tonight, wasn’t I?”"
Syro left a bigger impression on me than I Care Because You - I think it might tie in for 3rd with SAW II. It's really fucking good.
That's one of my biggest peeves too. It's so pointless. M83's "Hurry Up" was on double vinyl but it's a DOUBLE ALBUM. I'm in Halifax, NS (Canada) and pay a lot for vinyl - $39.99 plus tax for FlyLo vs $24.99 for Caribou - the extra vinyl makes a huge price difference. They're both excellent albums, but I will be spinning Caribou way more often - for obvious reasons and because it's my definite AOTY (Canuck bias maybe;)
I saw them play it live in 2004, it was pretty great - they used a steel drum for the riff and it sounded beautiful
yikes - seems like a bit of an insecure, homophobic prick
CLOUD. ON. MY. TONGUE.
