You can hear all of these (and many more!) on my handy 2021 playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7bqThfPrBKGrAXebcTXl7g?si=9f76f1d34ec34f9a
I didn't read any music books this year, but I did put Stephen Deusner's Drive-By Truckers book on my Christmas list, and am very much looking forward to it.
Glad to see the 1914 album on someone else's list, I'd never gotten into them before this, but I feel like that album was engineered in a lab specifically to appeal to me.
TNoB is comfortably my least favourite ATG album since they reformed. Not that I don't like it, I just like the other two better. Different strokes (er, riffs?) for different folks and all that!
Pretty sure the Ethereal Shroud album just came out today. Or at least that's when it showed up on Spotify (in Canada, at least). I'm listening to it right now. It good.
I'm going to assume that's Anti-God Hand, although Webster's defines Gid as "a disease especially of sheep caused by the larva of a tapeworm in the brain", which is also pretty metal.
I need to spend some more time with Hushed & Grim, my initial reaction was the same as the Rev's above, "this thing is a mess", and that's as far as I got. Hopefully I can carve out a "kill the lights and break out the good headphones" session (in my spare time LOL)
FWIW you're definitely not the only one who's missing it. Not my thing either, too chaotic for my tastes. Glad other people are enjoying it - I gave it a shot, it's not for me, I'm quite happy to listen to, oh, let's say Senjutsu (just to a give a totally random example) again instead.
I don't think I've actually heard the album, but if I had to pick a favourite album title of the year, I think Seven Evils Spawned From Seven Heads would probably be it
Glad to see some love for Spectral Lore, even though I have no idea how to actually type the album title and have to copy-paste it every time I want to put it on a list.
Ha ha, well hopefully my stanning hasn't been too over the top, but yeah, I love it (obviously). Not reinventing the wheel by any means, they're just really, REALLY good at what they do. There's a reason why they've been my favourite band for 35+ years.
I think you'll find that most of the Black Market staff (Mr. Nelson notwithstanding) have never been Deafheaven fans to begin with. Not to mention that their new one is decidedly not a metal album. (I think I've already made my feelings about Infinite Granite clear enough by this point, so I'll restrain myself from going any further).
Iron Maiden ticket secured, now I only have to wait 10 months until the show. I'll be able to pass at least some of that time listening to my favourite metal albums of 2021:
1. Iron Maiden - Senjutsu
2. Dodsrit - Mortal Coil
3. Mare Cognitum - Solar Paroxysm
4. Panopticon - And Again Into The Light
5. Enforced - Kill Grid
6. Spectral Lore - Ετερόφωτος
7. Рожь - ВЕЧНОЕ
8. Paranorm - Empyrean
9. 1914 - Where Fear and Weapons Meet
10. Spectral Wound - A Diabolic Thirst
11. Cannibal Corpse - Violence Unimagined
Very sorry to hear about your brother, condolences to you and your family - I lost a younger brother a few years ago as well, and music was instrumental in helping me get through through it, glad to hear it did the same for you.
