To me it always sounded like someone creating a modern soundtrack to a Kurosawa film.
To be honest this kind of just sounds like a less catchy retread of Seasons. Glad they're moving back towards the sound of In Evening Air/On the Water though, the songs on Singles were real good but the clean production killed their energy a bit.
Yeah, No More Stories gives me hope since it's my second favorite Mew album despite the missing member. I guess for me Mew has always been about the intersection of Bo's guitars and Jonas's vocals, so it's weird to hear one of those things missing. But I'm not against the idea of a tight pop album from these guys, I'm sure it'll still be good, though maybe less "essential" than previous releases.
Really worried about the lack of Bo on this album, new track is nice but it's missing that energy his playing brought. Easily the weakest closer of any of their albums which isn't a great sign. I'm still excited though, Mew are one of my all time favorites.
Counterpoint: it 100% is ok when they're fucking Nazis. Half the world went to war to do far worse than punch them in the face and it was generally considered a good move.
That's a pretty solid list, I'd love to hear a Kanye song inspired by Okami.
Real post: this cover and video are gorgeous.
Like if Kingdom Hearts brought you here.
You've got to go through hell to get to heaven, or something.
Feel like this gets weirdly close to an Amber Coffman diss track at a couple points, and overall the lyrics just sound really amateur. If this leads to some beef I think I'm going to have be #Team Amber.
Good to see these guys still know how to open the fuck out of an album.
Why not take the money and then donate it to a charity or something? Maybe one that brings music programs to underprivileged schools? All this bitching about capitalism and the state of the world doesn't mean anything if you aren't willing to redirect that shittiness into a force of good whenever you get the chance.
Oh man, did you miss this? You're in for a treat: http://www.stereogum.com/1855101/b-o-b-is-a-flat-earth-truther/news/
I feel like a lot of people will turned off by the fact that it's mostly kind of minimal ballads but I'm really enjoying this. Probably the strongest first impression one of her albums has made on me.
Phil wrote a really beautiful thing explaining the situation and detailing their relationship and desire for privacy: http://www.pwelverumandsun.com/ Can't believe something this shitty can happen to such good people.
Just off the top of my head, Owen Pallet does this kind of stuff all the time. Usually with much more interesting melodies.
It's 2016 man, can we stop with the whole "autotune is for people who can't sing" thing? It a legitimate effect that a lot of people like (myself included), there's so much more to music than just pure performance.
Mastering doesn't actually take that long, especially if it's a big budget album that's already mixed well. No reason the album couldn't be ready by this afternoon/tonight.
I did a speech about FES for public speaking once and it's truly fascinating. I think there was an invisible anti-moon? We need some kind of movie/book/tv show set in the flat earth world.
I want a fighting game that's Swift Squad v Grimes Squad.
He's been tweet exclusively in hiakus for awhile, even in replies. It's been a delight.
Yeah? A year off is not particularly noteworthy.
That's not really true, I saw him on three separate tours last year and he did plenty of press for Sauna, even going so far as to do album teasers/music videos/a few singles etc. He played the game harder than ever this album, got a few polite nods, and was cast aside. I'm not really sure what went wrong.
Don't have a list ready but it's genuinely depressing to see the new Mount Eerie go completely unmentioned by literally everyone. It feels like Phil gets ignored no matter what he does and it's a real bummer considering how excellent Sauna is.
Great article, but I cannot sit idly by when someone implys that Only Skin is not in her top 10, or even the top 3 of Ys. That song is a goddamn masterpiece that's still giving 10 years later.
This is so good why aren't more people paying attention to this.
Kill V Maim is kicking my ass right now.
Reducing Divers to "generally lovely" is... wow.
Man "Time, As a Symptom" is one of the most powerful songs I've heard in a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if the next Godspeed album was titled "White Star, White Ship-Nightjar, Transmit: Transcend!"
Pitchfork's whole reaction to this album has reminded me of a mother who's suddenly realized her children have grown up and no longer depend on her. "I can't believe they would do something so hasty and reckless without even calling me first! And after I spent 10 years raising them!"
Does anyone who's heard it want to talk about how Somewhere Tonight is the most "Beach Housey" song ever written and also maybe the most beautiful?
I was going to complain about this but then I saw All Dogs is also Yowler so I'm here to say listen to Yowler.
Is there a law against riding a small hands-free segway around an airport? Honest question.
Gonna have to question the lack of Anna von Hausswolff, although I guess that's more appropriate for winter than summer.
This is basically what Two Years At Sea is, minus the robots. I recommend it.
