Sleigh Bells on Kimmel

Sleigh Bells became a festival-crushing live act on the strength of just two people — or, more precisely, in the strength of Alexis Krauss’s obliterating charisma. So it’s a bit shocking to see the duo with a ton of other people onstage. Last night, Sleigh Bells were the musical guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where they performed the title track of their new album Bitter Rivals. They also did album track “Tiger Kit” as an online bonus. And for both songs, they had help: A drummer, three backup singers, a three-person horn section. I’ll leave it up to you to decide if the extra personnel added anything; the two performances are below.

Bitter Rivals is out now on Mom + Pop.

  1. oh man, Ian Cohen has never been more right than when he said the new stuff sounds like someone doing a Sleigh Bell’s parody. I can’t even listen to more than a bar or two of Alexis Krause’s rapping in Bitter Rivals before I have to turn it off, and I loved the first album (and liked the second).

  2. dear chris, everything sounds like monogenre now that that word exists. thanks.

  3. I didn’t think it was horrible. Although I don’t understand the need for the backup singers whatsoever. They added nothing except for the very last line in “Tiger Kit.”

…now the backup singers on NIN’s Tension tour on the other hand? Absolutely AMAZING.

  4. Yeah, this is a disappointing album, and these live versions don’t help. I loved their first 2 albums so much. I guess they needed to be more poppy to appeal to the masses.

  5. Only watched this because Kendra Morris was one of the backup singers, she’s far and away a better singer than anyone else that was on the stage, including Alexis Krause.

I dug the song though, the horns were great. Tried listening to the album though and they’re pretty much all that exact same song, but not as full sounding as this live performance.

So now I’m back listening to Kendra Morris and the rest of you should do the same.

  6. Is there a less annoying band on earth ? Man these bad heavy metal guitars, this candy ass singing mixed with half ass rapping, and now they’ve got horns ! I can’t wait for the banjo solos on the next album.
