The soundtrack to the forthcoming big-deal movie Divergent has already produced a few fascinating songs, like M83’s soaring “I Need You” and Pia Mia’s Chance The Rapper/Clams Casino collab “Fight For You.” But the most intriguing song on the soundtrack-album tracklist was always going to be “In Distress,” which unites A$AP Rocky with the punishing French dance producer (and Kanye’s Yeezus collaborator) Gesaffelstein, and now we get to hear this. A song like this shows what might happen if and when the blaring industrial aesthetic of Yeezus leeches into the rap mainstream, and it turns out that it sounds like ideal sci-fi soundtrack fodder. More than anything, “In Distress” reminds me of “I Against I,” the Mos Def/Massive Attack collab from the Blade II soundtrack, and I mean that as a compliment. Listen below.
The Divergent soundtrack is out 3/11.
