It looks like NME skipped their annual Cool List last year, so this year’s Cool List had to be extra cool (there are 25 more slots this time). You’ll recognized a number of American names in the top ten, including the Drums’s Jonathan Pierce (witness his cool in person at STEREO★GUN), Beth Cosentino, and Kanye West. Of Consentino they wrote: “Bethany’s walking proof that weed needn’t completely curtail creativity. Ha! Take that, scientists and government advisers!” I love that they modified it with “completely.” Other surprising names: Rivers Cuomo, My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way, Willow Smith. By the way, there’s a 31-year age difference between Cuomo and Smith. You can be cool at any age, though you probably care less when you are old. The whole list:

Really, there are so many new entries this year that it

No Panda Bear? Well that’s just crazy.
Other than his 2 singles he hasn’t released any substantial material this year. Most of these groups have either released records, liked by NME or they have, through singles or eps, amassed some hype towards impending releases. Right now Panda Bear doesn’t have the best hype for his record; This is the general consensus and does not reflect my views, I actually enjoyed both Tomboy and his most recent, You Can Count On Me and look forward to the Tomboy album.

and there is a shit-ton of hype for panda’s new album. even though no one knows when its coming out, everyone i know/lots of people on the interweb are very excited about it.

I’m really surprised the lead singer from Sharks didn’t make this list. I’d peg the band to be NME’s coolest “it” Brit punk band of the year, much like they named Frank of Gallows the coolest a few years back. Maybe next year?

So, everyone who released an album this year gets on the “cool” list? The length of the list is ridiculous. I can picture editors debating over who was the 64th and 63rd coolest people of the year.
What does it even mean to be the 60th or 70th coolest person of the year? At what point does being on the list go from being a compliment to an insult?
The only reason to make a list that long is so that readers can say, “Hey, there’s [my favorite artist]! What the heck? Why are they number [x], when they really should have been in the top [x]!”
I’d love to know their system for deciding the coolest klaxon. I wonder has it caused tension in the band?
Well, not as much domestic tension as being crowned 64 cooler than your boyfriend like Best Coast…. gonna go smoke that marijuana like a cigarette to be a kewl as my hero.
