We already knew it was happening, but last night, we got a mystical convergence of esoteric underground-music veterans, when Yo La Tengo backed up Aesop Rock on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert. This was, amazingly, Aesop’s first-ever network-TV performance in a decades-long career, and he did the social-recluse anthem “Dorks,” from the impressive new album The Impossible Kid. Yo La Tengo, joined by a DJ and a hypeman, did a nice job conjuring the track’s broken beauty, and Aesop did not look remotely nervous. It’s a very cool thing that this happened, and you can watch it below.
The Impossible Kid is out now on Rhymesayers.
