But there's a hell of a lot more going on in the songs than just guitar. Listen to "Nancy From Now On". It's all about the arrangement/interplay.
There are some decent hooks and she has melodies for days, but I hate how the drums are mixed (snare, kick and hi-hat are way too loud) and am not digging the distorted guitar or production in general. Guess I wanted something more aesthetically beautiful. I had low expectations so I'm certainly not disappointed, but this style of production doesn't really appeal to me any longer. Maybe it'll grow on me. Not hard to see that this will be a huge crossover success though.
Wow, a political issue where special interests are involved and those endorsing it stand to benefit? The end is fucking nigh.
Was your storied ayahuasca trip that supposedly catalyzed your artistic transformation your last hallucinogenic experience, or do you continue to partake in it or other substances with consciousness-expanding potential on occasion? Do you find the general usage of such substances worthwhile, or do you feel that you simply reach a plateau after a time and have nothing more to gain other than a purely recreational good time once certain truths are gleaned?
Great stuff. Really looking forward to this album.
I like the guy, but I don't fully buy that his "cover of a cover" was purely a social experiment. It was both mocking one (or two) person (people) he obviously loathes as well as allowing him to clearly benefit hugely through the exposure. He's playing the game just like everyone else, just in a slightly craftier and more cynical way.
If no one else is gonna say it then I will: that was not very good at all. People so badly want Grimes to succeed, but the question is: if Grimes' name wasn't attached to this exact same song, how would you be reacting?
Totally concur. I rarely agree with the petty bullshit people call #problematic on a daily basis, but this story and everyone in it just saddens and disgusts me on every level.
While Sexwitch was a terrible, terrible mistake, that review is unbelievably condescending and, more unforgivably, incredibly pretentious. Some good things were brought to light, but (sorry outrage addicts) seriously, lighten up.
Came in with very low expectations. They've been exactly met. Maybe there'll be a couple good songs like on her last two efforts.
But what are Bebe Zeva and Unchill Azn Bro's thoughts on the matter?
This is my favorite song on the (agreedly underrated, and their best) album. Not what I envisioned for the video, but it has some striking moments.
Definitely 2 of the best songs on the album. If she'd released an ep or a short lp of the best songs, it would've been a pretty widely lauded album. Luckily I was able to delete and forget about more than half the album so it still seems like a very solid effort to me. Good performances btw.
Maybe when you grow up, have some real deal shit happen to you, get some perspective, live in a developing country for awhile and then realize what a self-righteous, pretentious fool you used to be, you'll be able to look back and laugh. And realize you've become exactly what you used to rail against, but it will all make sense. Because you'll be old and stuck in your ways, and young, hip people will mock you too. But you'll just laugh and realize how inexperienced and full of shit they are and how all of what they do and say is a carefully culled together artifice to win favor and popularity. Then you'll get cancer and a young person will take care of you and you'll be grateful and at peace with the world and realize everyone has some good in them despite vast age and generational differences you could never understand before and be ready to die at peace.
I'm a big FJM fan, but the fact he even feels the need to comment on any of these very obvious and fairly long-standing cultural mores makes me think he's way less hip and cynical than I thought.
I've been fucking myself since 6th grade. I want royalties.
This is a totally front-loaded album to my ears. I agree with the guy above who says Lost My Head There isn't so hot (though it picks up in the last half) and think after that the album starts to seriously lag. First half is pretty great, but still doesn't hold up to his last two imo. Still a worthy record on the whole.
I had this back in the day. Hail the Leaf was my anthem for a bit. Surprised there's no mention of Acid Bath in this write up. I think they were the best metal band to come out of Louisiana during that time and had some good diversity on their albums. When the Kite String Pops really made the transition to extreme metal a lot easier.
Listened to a leak last night and I fully agree with this write-up. LDR is so many layers of "meta" at this point. Pure PoMo pop.
Lyrical content-wise, this song seems really out of place compared to the other songs on the album (with the exception of Strange Encounter, though that at least has some sweet sentiments underneath). This seems a lot more akin to Fear Fun fare. Really happy he included it though because it's one of the best songs on the album. "Ohhhh my god, I swear this never happens..."
Much improved with the new instrumentation/production. Very excited for this.
We've heard 3 songs. You even posted about the first one, bro: http://www.stereogum.com/1815778/lana-del-rey-honeymoon/mp3s/
I really enjoyed the Don't Tell Me/Champagne single she put out when she first started releasing music a few years ago, but haven't been able to get into anything else since. New stuff has some good pop songwriting, but still not my thing.
This stuff is weird as shit, but I like it. Uh, thanks Grimes. First EP is called Columbine EP and has pictures of the Columbine shooters dead on the floor at the school and has her covering Reflecting God by Marilyn Manson in that super sweet voice with extremely spare instrumentation. Also on the same EP is a cover of Pumped Up Kicks. Then there's the He Hit Me and it Felt Like a Kiss "cover" (which was definitely pre-Ultraviolence by over a year) where she sweetly talks about her spanking/punishment fetish. This is from an album called An Ode to Dawn Weiner. My kind of stuff.
I mean, it's an ok song. I guess. Are the standards really that low though for pop music that this is considered "really great". Wait, don't answer that.
This leaked almost a month ago. I don't think it's anywhere close to as good as his last two albums, but it's still solid enough.
But...his name is Destroyer, right? And I said the album Destroys (notice the clever capitaliz...you're a jerk.
This album...Destroys
I'll check the CRJ out at some point. I like a couple of those new FKA twigs songs a lot, but am pretty lukewarm on the rest. That's been the case with all of her stuff though. I really like this Briana Marela album. My pick atm without having heard stereogum's choice.
Most definitely the best version. I like the subtle variations too. Such a great album. I think the leak, like with beach house, really fucked the hype up though. It's easily on par with Kaputt imo.
