Yeah, reading that "don't fucking do it, you're ruining your life" line kinda hurt. It's one thing to hear that stuff from your friends, siblings, and parents, but from someone who's years ahead of you in that very same process? Yikes.
Another Thing Called Divine Fits is totally coming out one day you guys
I was at the show, and it was weird all around, even before the collapse/ambulance thing. Steve was all like "let's get some girls up here" and went well out of his way to tell the security people to bring "like 20 or 30 girls" onstage to dance with them. It happened just like that too, because you know, college kids+Smash Mouth+alcohol. Same reasons everyone was chanting "Shrek, Shrek, Shrek" between every song. Most seemingly weren't bothered by the collapse and ambulances, including the band. Personally though, the faraway sirens and backdrop of flashing emergency lights kind of ruined the feelgood mood for me. The band understandably rushed through the last two songs and got the fuck outta there, and everyone dispersed as if nothing had happened. I went back to my apartment and watched Spirited Away for like the tenth time and wondered if I had just seen someone almost die. So, the Smash Mouth live experience in 2016. Who knew?
that needlessly saucy profile pic tho do you like, facebook with that thing?
also could someone please put a beat under this?
hey you leave my boy outta this he eats clean
I was just about to lament that! Damn near the best thing they had going
I like to think that Bono and Chris Martin have a friendly bet going and just feed off each other's hard-to-stomach sincerity. Like a sickeningly sweet arms race. I'm not above bumping any of this shit though, let's be honest.
Best case scenario: this is a weak-ass remix of an actually great lead single to be released shorty. Worst case scenario: Songs of Experience is really just A Head Full of Dreams 2. Nothin like greeting every bit of news about your favorite band with dread!
Okay yeah this thing is important. Time for a couple fun listens, then one more serious one, then it'll go on the ol' iPod for day-to-day last second summery goodness. I'm happy.
I wanna have this first listen to be a fun, social thing but I also want it to be a focused personal thing! This comment is my compromise. It's really good so far.
Do that thing where you open your iPod Classic up and replace the hard drive with an SD card adapter and a 256gb SD card. I did, and my lil guy is gonna be the best iPod Apple never made for the rest of time. I mean seriously: 256gb, solid state, no moving parts, quicker response time, lighter, less breakable, fuckin perfect. I encourage everyone to do this and no one does but that doesn't stop me. It's a game changer.
The Spoils is exactly perfect. I need a new album from these guys ugh
Guys, you missed the most important part! "Splendor & Misery is an Afrofuturist, dystopian concept album that follows the sole survivor of a slave uprising on an interstellar cargo ship, and the onboard computer that falls in love with him. Thinking he is alone and lost in space, the character discovers music in the ship’s shuddering hull and chirping instrument panels. William and Jonathan’s tracks draw an imaginary sonic map of the ship’s decks, hallways, and quarters, while Daveed’s lyrics ride the rhythms produced by its engines and machinery. In a reversal of H.P. Lovecraft’s concept of cosmic insignificance, the character finds relief in learning that humanity is of no consequence to the vast, uncaring universe. It turns out, pulling the rug out from under anthropocentrism is only horrifying to those who thought they were the center of everything to begin with. Ultimately, the character decides to pilot his ship into the unknown—and possibly into oblivion—instead of continuing on to worlds whose systems of governance and economy have violently oppressed him." HOLY SHIT
oh my god this is fantastic. that flute synth thing omg
I love this column, keep up the fantastic work. I also love the "Tags: Billy Corgan" at the end.
I love that album, btw. It just also happens to be the most mid-90s thing in the world, in nearly every arena. Car Button Cloth is crazy underrated though.
yep, that's the exact reason you can't go to a place with used CDs and not find ten copies of "Come on Feel the Lemonheads"
it's back to normal, it must've just been some weird browser or internet connectivity stuff. it was bad though, every post took up the whole width of my window, and only like 2 of the top stories bar was available at a time. and also everything on the side was gone too. basically it was probably my fault and i'm glad i don't have to get out of my comfort zone again just yet
i've never even had a smartphone change scares me don't just spring this on me guys
am i going crazy or is the homepage somehow even more huge and obnoxiously mobile-friendly all of a sudden
I went from lurking this site two redesigns ago, (still miss that '08 "free mp3's in a notebook" look tbh) to posting a lot, back to lurking over the years. Shit waxes and wanes with my interest in "indie music blog"-core, a very real genre. Now I seem to exclusively be about posting really sincere comments for some reason. It's weird when you've been going through a really tough time, and all of a sudden your username is writing snark checks that your personality can't cash. Luckily, literally everyone else here has that more than covered. :)
to be clear: sad like heartbreaking, definitely not sad like pitiful. Tone gets lost in text sometimes. I hope she's alright.
on the contrary, I had no idea this was happening, and was pleasantly surprised when my purchases of the A Moon Shaped Pool and Puberty 2 CDs were greeted with a cool, endearing little pamphlet by Stanley Donwood, a promo poster for the album, and a sign-up for a free giveaway. It's a nice little thing, why make it any more than that?
Seriously, the only thing matching my fucking heartbreak right now is that exact feeling. That strange mix of isolation and togetherness. Who could've guessed that the single deadliest shooting in American history would be today? and against LGBT people? in what is often the only truly safe space a lot of us have? I mean fuck, that could've been me. Or my friends. Or any number of people I've never met that all share a version of my story. Those people, our people, are fucking amazing. We're not alone, no matter how deeply and how often it seems that way. Just trying to remind myself of that, as much as anyone.
ok but Everton's gonna be on the up and up with that Moshiri money soon though, and Stones is gonna stay and everything will be perfect I promise
I teared up a little, not gonna lie. It's strange how tragedies can pull things into focus. I'm not usually the "out, loud, and proud" type (commenting on an internet indie music site, you don't say) but today's news, people's responses, pride month, and a whole host of personal stuff are all kind of coming together for me right now. Came out 5 years ago, and although I'm not really gay, (turns out I'm actually transgender instead, here's to opening cans of worms) I think I am ready to stop shrinking away from this community. This shit's important, and I'm honestly proud of everyone's strength of character to live as themselves. It's certainly not easy. Basically: thanks for the words Ed and I agree completely.
So what's with that DAILY DEAL bullshit on the front page? If we're gonna be that blatantly advertised at, I feel like it should at least have a comments section to go along with it.
It's funny because they just announced that untitled unmastered physicals are coming next week. Can't wait to bump that shit in my 5 disc changer
I'm loving this Mike Eagle coverage, but hot damn how are you guys not posting about Aesop Rock? The music video for Rings is stellar, and just this morning there's this new promo: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/4b24513f62/the-impossible-kid-ep-1-sorry-i-m-late The Impossible Kid and Hella Personal Film Festival are gonna be awesome.
This album is so fucking good
I love grotesque, ugly, strangely beautiful album art, and I love the concept of this one. It just looks like awful CGI though. I was enamored with the original album art, but this looks so badly dated already.
This new layout is scary. I had Adblock's Element Hider in use for a fair portion of the old layout, so I don't even know what I'm supposed to be seeing right now. :0
So glad Open Mike is getting coverage here. Hellfyre Club is ballin', and both Milo and Open Mike Eagle's 2014 albums were in my top 5
