Nearly lifelong Tennessee resident here. Lost my job due to COVID and have tried very hard to take all necessary precautions and strictly follow guidelines for...ah, right, nearly four fucking months. To say I’ve been let down (again) by my home state is an understatement. I fucking can’t anymore.
“Antebellum” being problematic was well known to me but I have to admit “Dixie” was a blind spot. That said, though I have been known to use and like the term, I’m all for confronting implicit biases, revealing blind spots, and changing names/pulling down monuments. So...long live the Chicks!
Fuck, no need to apologize. That was the single most exciting minute of music I’ve heard all year. (And that is NOT a takedown of any other music I’ve heard this year.)
A few thoughts - Everything you said about the first two albums is true but I am also quite partial to the third, "Under The Big Black Sun". Though I don't think you were necessarily saying it wasn't, I just want to note that some (most?) of that alt-country leaning stuff was pretty good ("See How We Are" is a wonderful song). Now to the bad stuff...some members of this band are practically alt-right leaning at this point. Exene in particular, as much as I love her (and God I do love her still, somehow) is a paranoid conspiracy freak. I'd be willing to bet she's hollering about reopening the economy and something incoherent about the bill of rights somewhere right now. That said, I definitely can't wait to check this out. It's complicated sometimes, this music nerd thing.
