The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1

Last year’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire had a pretty strong soundtrack, by blockbuster standards; the makers of the new Transformers are not, after all, calling the National and asking them for new songs. But the new Hunger Games movie, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, might be better, thanks to a match made in thoughtful-teenager heaven. Lorde, who covered Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” on the Catching Fire soundtrack, will hand-pick all the artists who will appear on the new movie’s soundtrack, which is out this fall on Republic. Expect so much Bright Eyes! Lorde will also give the album its first single, which will probably not just be about how we’ll never be victors. But we can hope.

  2. Personally, I’m excited for this, but shouldn’t we be distinguishing between a “soundtrack” and a “tie-in compilation”? One is music that accompanies visuals, the other is a bunch of unrelated music that is not only not in the movie (unless one or two songs show up in the credits), but usually isn’t written for or about the movie, and is usually just an excuse for some major label priority acts to offload their B-sides and pick-up a paycheck? Whether the compilation is good or bad, it’s really not accurate to call it a soundtrack.
