Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

This week saw more speculation and controversy about the future of streaming music. Spotify announced an expansion into video, news, and fitness (and coffee), but not before leaked documents revealed the Swedish behemoth has paid Sony Music millions in advances and ad inventory that probably weren’t shared with artists. Meanwhile, Tidal has really been ramping up its exclusives with concerts by Prince and Jay Z, two Nicki Minaj videos, and more on the way. Maybe they’ll even start writing their own bios. That said, I didn’t appreciate Jack White’s disingenuous FAQ about Tidal. And I suspect the questions were all made up. [UPDATE: In response to widespread suspicion about the source of the questions, the Third Man Records Q&A page has been quietly updated to clarify that queries came from Vault subscribers and Facebook users.] Elsewhere, Rdio is still chugging along — they’ve announced a $4 tier that sounds somewhat confusing. Rhapsody’s in business, too, for the moment. Milk Music just had layoffs, probably because you’ve never heard of Milk Music. The big question mark in streaming these days is Apple Music (FKA Beats). It’ll probably be announced at next month’s WWDC, and it’s expected to be big. Hits Daily Double alleges that Kanye West’s SWISH could be part of it. (They also say West is “distancing himself from Tidal.”) The Cupertino team already has all of our credit card numbers (and Yeezy’s friend Zane Lowe), so don’t underestimate its ability to jump ahead in this game. Just remember, in Russia Apple Music streams you.

#FatherJohnMisty's streaming game on point.

You’d have to look at this objectively, as pop bands go they’re certainly up there with the best of the past 15 years. They’ve consistently released some very solid material, just look at the singles. In terms of calling them the best band of the past 15 years, I’d have to say no.
The likes of The National, The War on Drugs, Arcade Fire, Wilco, Animal Collective, and LCD Soundsystem would pip them.

The sheer volume of better bands that flooded my brain when I read the article title almost caused a total mental shutdown.

I knew there would be mad trolling, so its refreshing to read an objective opinion on this. Best band is definitely an overstatement, but when they’re good they are actually pretty great. Even just in terms of the make up of a band. Having a front man with personality is something that a lot of “better” indie acts are definitely lacking. Also, from a musicians standpoint I feel their rhythm section is criminally underrated.

“Hey Jack, my only complaint about TIDAL is that it seems TOO good to be true. Is that the case?”

“In the end, it was only a one-way transaction . . . I had no idea that this would happen. It’s so cruel, it’s incredible. I will stay away from it for sure.” Now I’m not calling Marina Abramovi? a plagiarist, but we sure these quotes aren’t lifted wholesale from reviews of Magna Carta Holy Grail?

“I think TIDAL is a noble cause, I don’t understand the backlash that it’s getting.”
Great question right there.

I hope Abramovic knows that this was a pre-Tidal Jay Z, who just didn’t care about artists like he does now.

All credit from this article went out the window when Tom Breihan said Killer Mike was the best rapper. How can I take him serious on any other topic after he says that?

Was anyone else a little put-off by the overt sexuality of this? The conceit is cool, but the amount of skin and visual innuendos seemed like a little much.

Yeah when Tidal gave us lossless streaming, I was like whatever, but this video of two porn stars is some groundbreaking shit! I don’t need lossless audio on my porn anyway.

Maher must be getting pretty desperate for guests to have someone named “Killer Mike” on his show. Never heard of the guy and now I know why. He has no brains just like all of his idiot rapper buddies. Rap does suck bigtime!!! Bill O’Reilly is a very intelligent man. Maher & “Killer Mike” are two scumbag lowlife motherf*ckers who long for the destruction of our country.
