Yesterday, Pitchfork published an interview with M83 main man Anthony Gonzalez in which he talked about scoring the new sci-fi movie Oblivion, saying that he almost quit the project and that the Hollywood experience severely bummed him out. He mentions a few times that his soundtrack for the movie isn’t really an M83 album, that fans shouldn’t expect one. But “Oblivion,” his soundtrack collaboration with the Norwegian singer Susanne Sundfør, certainly sounds like an M83 song, with all its blaring widescreen triumph. And when M83 and Sundfør played the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, a full string section behind them, it sure didn’t sound like something that Hollywood suits had taken away from Gonlazez; it kept all its monolithic power. Watch the performance below.
The Oblivion soundtrack is out now on Back Lot.
