Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

Can we cool it with the new music already? [extreme Bon Iver voice] It better be over soon. While NIN weren’t yet eligible for inclusion, we did follow up our annual 50 Best Albums countdown with 50(-ish) more year-end lists: Rap verses! Copyright lawsuits! Breakups! Tweets! Pop songs! Beefs! Ty Dolla $ign features! Country albums! Jazz albums! Next year’s albums! Etc, etc… We also interviewed Wayne Coyne and Charli XCX about the year in politics and culture and Pokémon. Check all that year-end stuff out here. Oh and we published our first-ever candle review — servicey.

2016 has been a hell of a ride. I’m not going to remind you of all the dire shit we’ve been through in the last 12 months. And I’m certainly not going to imply that a few dozen excellent pop albums came anywhere close to balancing out said shit. At this point, we probably don’t deserve nice things like great music, but lucky for us, we have it, and I think I speak for all of us here when I say we’d be even worse off without it. We’re fortunate to have artists who can bolster our humanity when it seems in danger of being blotted out by the ugliness of our times. Fittingly, many of the finest musical statements produced this year dwelt on loss and anxiety, but we also got records that carved out much needed spaces for experiencing joy and tranquility.

Despite the many crushing disappointments that will define 2016 in the history books, my year was mostly good. I moved to a new city and started a new job after years of feeling stagnant. I made new friends and got closer to old ones. I got to know myself and my partner a lot better in the process, too. All of this has rarely been easy, but it has, by and large felt right. I hope each of you also had as good a year as possible given the circumstances, and that you spent your time listening to music that made you dance, or cry, or mosh, or swoon, and just generally feel like a full human being. And if you did have a shit year – well, I’m glad you made it through and that you spent some of it here with us.

Here are your 40 favorite albums of the year. To make the list, I added up the number of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-10th place rankings for each album, assigning 5, 3, 2, and 1 points, respectively, for each placement. Each album is listed with its total score and total number of votes in parentheses. There were way more votes this year than last year or the year before that, and I did my best to count them all accurately. I hope I didn’t fuck it up too badly, and I apologize in advance for any mistakes.
