Stereogum Cruel Summer 2013

This week, for the 237th time, our country tis of thee will celebrate its Miss Independence. Which means that this week, for the fourth time, our blog will celebrate the arrival of Cruel Summer, our annual heartbreak of a mixtape. Tradition. Times have changed since our 2010, 2011, and 2012 installments. Namely, nobody releases free MP3s anymore! I mean, some people do, but the best tracks tend to be stream-only. So to harness the highest potential of these transitional times, this year the primary format for Cruel Summer is a 42-track Soundcloud, for a soundtrack that’s just over 3 hours, long enough to complement your BBQ dance party and also the aggro/bittersweet/romantic moodswings you’ll experience later in the day due to partying in the sun. (If you like downloads, there’s something for you, too: an 18-track downloadable zip of the mix tracks that are available as legal MP3s. For the full experience, though, it’s Soundcloud.) Love to my cohorts Scott, Tom, Michael, and Claire, whose nominations make this year’s mixtape the most democratic we’ve seen to date. How fitting. And as always, Cruel Summer is entirely free and legal. Just like America.

Happy 4th, ch’all.

Feel free to express your input!

      • Oh I didn’t mention that was Part 2 of 3 for my summer playlists. Here is Part 1:

“Mind Mischief (The Field Remix)” — Tame Impala
“in another way” — my bloody valentine
“Welcome to Japan” — The Strokes
        “Sleepwalking” — Deerhunter
“I’d Rather Be High” — David Bowie
        “Unbelievers” — Vampire Weekend
“No Need For A Leader” — Unknown Mortal Orchestra
“Stupid Things” — Yo La Tengo
        “Strife” — Savages
        “Vertigo” — Deafheaven

        • These both look good! Love your choices of “second string” songs from VW, Disclosure, Deafheaven and Daft Punk (second string meaning the lesser obvious song).

Is there any chance we get to see part three? I can’t seem to find Kurt Vile, Cronin, The National (Sea of Love) on your lists, so I assume they’re on that part?

          • I’m all about “second string” songs! I find that when I use the less popular songs from albums on my playlists, they end up being popular after I’ve heard them dozens of times through the mix.

I’ll post part three when I’m finished but it won’t be what you’d expect…

Initially I was just going to do a summer playlist. Then I had a bunch of hip-hop and (for lack of a better term) indie rock that I felt didn’t work together, so I opted to do two playlists, one for each. So part 2 is my more traditional hip-hop / feel good dance jams that you’d normally associate with summer.

Part 1 was my prelude using lots of feel good rock songs just to get the blood boiling. Now, I set out to include a lot of my favorites, which definitely included Kurt Vile and later Cronin & The National after I saw how much Stereogum (and local friends) were enjoying those records. What happened was Part 1 ended up with a run-time damn near close to the 59 minute limit for my radio show. So I had to trim and sequence accordingly to whittle those songs to an exact run time. I also had to choose what I had on vinyl (since I do an all vinyl show) which unfortunately omitted The National & Mikal Cronin since I don’t own them on vinyl (YET!)

I TRIED to get “KV Crimes” on there, I really did. It was in the list for weeks before I opted for something low key and shorter (those KV songs can be long!) That’s when Yo La Tengo made it to the list and honestly, “Stupid Things” is SOOO FUCKING GOOD. I’m glad it made it on there.

So Part 1 is called “Summer Wakes” and Part 2 is called “Summer Lives” and Part 3 will be called “Summer Sleeps”. So part 3 will be a playlist of ambient tracks. I’ve made a few playlists like this in the past with really chill songs, usually without lyrics, designed for sleeping or just late night easy listening. That list won’t be limited to 2013, but I know right now I’m closing it with Boards of Canada’s “Sundown”. I’ll probably make pt. 3 all vinyl as well and probably try to make it 59 minutes as well.

But pt. 2 is my straight killer list. Thanks for the compliment below Tim :)

        • raptor part 2 of 3 is a GREAT set of tunes

      • stalker! the 6:39 mark on there is probably the most riveting moment of music i’ve heard all year.

also (and i figured you’d concur with this rj) – when are we getting our slow focus premature evaluation, stereogum?

        • Right? I always thought the point of Premature Evaluation was a way to acknowledge albums that leaked way too early for critics to review them. But now with the whole, “If it gets Prematurely Evaluated, it can’t be Album of the Week” I don’t know what to think.

Because “Slow Focus” could easily be an AotW (I’m not too sure what else comes out that week) but at this point it’s like, just throw down the Pre-Eval so we can all talk about it already!

I was so excited when it leaked because at the outset of that playlist I knew I wanted to close it down with Fuck Buttons (especially since I closed out the other one with Deafheaven). So at first I had “The Red Wing” closing down shop, but it didn’t feel right as a closing track. Not only is “Stalker” longer, but it has that terrific fucking build that you mention above, whereas “The Red Wing” just gets up and slays face. (A good thing! Just not for a closing track)

    • Here’s my summer playlist so far, including a few things that didn’t come out this year but are new to me:

Disclosure ft. Aluna George – White Noise
Emiliana Torrini – Jungle Drum (Jai Paul Remix)
Jai Paul – Str8 Outta Mumbai
Bjork – Crystalline (Omar Souleyman Remix)
Janelle Monae ft. Erykah Badu – Q.U.E.E.N. (mashed up with the Prince Remix version)
      M.I.A. – Bring Tha Noize
Rhythmes Digitales – Music Makes You Lose Control
      Chromatics – Cherry
Daft Punk ft. Panda Bear – Doin’ It Right (Theatre Of Delays Remix)
      Daft Punk – Instant Crush
      The Strokes – Tap Out
      Himanshu (Das Racist) – Computers
      Foxygen – Make It Known
      Foxygen – Shuggie
      Shuggie Otis – Special
      Beck – Defriended
      Beck – I Won’t Be Long
      T.Rex – Sitting Here
      Beach Fossils – Sleep Apnea

      Pity Sex – Wind Up
Mikal Cronin – Shout It Out
Kurt Vile – Wakin On A Pretty Day

Nosaj Thing ft. Kazu Makino – Eclipse/Blue
      Jai Paul – Zion Wolf
      Thundercat – Heartbreaks + Setbacks
      Zombies – Summertime

  8. Missing “If you didn’t see me (You weren’t on the dancefloor).”

  9. Nice surprise to see GbV on there, good calls on the picks fro Vile & Run the Jewels, too. But “Childhood’s End” – kind of a morbid track to include, especially so late.

  10. I’ll just post what i have in my car’s CD player, cuz I have no idea how you guys keep up with this much new music; it’s really quite impressive.

    The Strokes – Angles
    Them Crooked Vultures
    The Doors – Morrison Hotel
    Little Joy
    The Strokes – Comedown Machine
The Strokes – Room on Fire

    i like the strokes.

  11. I personally feel like Lose Yourself to Dance by Daft Punk should be on here, as well as the Trying to Be Cool/Drakkar Noir mix that Phoenix used for the recent video.

  12. got to Kirin Callinan…the first song that did something for me on this mix… and i knew i’d heard that riff somewhere and then it hit me…it was only once, when i saw him open for Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti last month. The guy’s a mad scientist. See him if you get the chance; it’s an experience. just him with a guitar slung around his neck with an arc of pedals at his feet and he does very unnatural things with them and his voice. really wonderful stuff.

Rest of the album wasn’t as great though I’ll have to give it another listen. But Cathouse, dude.. it’s freaking Stiv Bators back from the dead having just worked a 9-5.

  14. Here it is in Spotify form. Or rather, here is a playlist with the few songs that are available on Spotify:

  15. Yes! Todd Terje rules!
