Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

Hey ghouls. This week’s Shut Up, Dude comes to you from NOLA, where Ryan Leas and I are reporting on The Voodoo Experience. So far the Voodoo Experience is eating lunch at the hotel Starbucks, but soon we plan to see Chance The Rapper, Modest Mouse, Jason Isbell, Jane’s Addiction, Title Fight, and a bunch of stuff at our tent with Spin and BV. It’s also Halloween weekend, so I’m in costume as Adele’s phone and Ryan is dressed as the ghost of Grantland. What is your costume? Bonus thumbs up for pics.

…..approximately 2 seconds in. The look that says “I’m going to betray you, bloc” and then the smile that says “I’m gonna enjoy it”

I actually like This record, no surprise there since I always rep Natasha in my avatar. It’s not great, but it’s good. That said, I don’t see anything in Zohra’s critique that I would consider unfair. I was disappointed to glean from the initial coverage of Sexwitch that most of the material came from a single comp. They clearly didn’t do their homework. Zohra herself comes off as a disappointed fan. She says she likes Bat for Lashes, she says she likes two (of the best IMO) songs on the Sexwitch album. When I read the comments above and I see the usual whining about “outrage” … does she really seem outraged? Is it possible to be critical of this kind of project without being dismissed as someone who just loves to be outraged? The only place where she sounds super pissed is where she’s saying they didn’t properly attribute a song, and that’s pretty serious!

“I have James Rettig breathing down my neck every day in the office telling me to listen to Carly Rae Jepsen”

Holy shit. This line made me shudder. That sounds terrifying.

No matter how I say this it makes me look like an asshole.

So ‘gum won’t cover a band that says horrible shit about a group of people? But continually covers a man that absolutely beat the shit out of another person? I find Whirr to be a bunch of assholes just like any other decent person. But Chris Brown is a fucking monster. It begs the question…..is there a component of popularity that decides this kind of morality? If Whirr sold zillions of records could they say whatever the fuck they want and still get coverage? By this standard can Kanye, Radiohead, or any other mega star straight up kill somebody and still get play on ‘gum when their new single drops?

“…her music is constantly shoved down our throats as while we’re being told its good.” This is exactly how I feel, like I’m being force-fed something that tastes like microwaved garbage while being told that it’s a rib-eye.

To those Carly Rae Jepsen fans that permeate this site – THIS is what an indie pop song sounds like. After first listen, it’s as good as REALiTi, Genesis, Oblivion, etc. and better than Go. This bodes well I’d say.

Because (and this is very ironic based on her relationship with abuse and the like) her music is constantly shoved down our throats as while we’re being told its good.

She does have some good tunes, and I think it’s cool that someone as oddball/left field as her is garnering so much attention, but I think its a bit too sensationalist.
