I tear up during the "Reckoner, take me with you(yer)" part. It feels like he is longing for a real place that you can go to where everything will be all right. But then you also kind of know that you won't be able to go there. Then you're just alone and sad.
I could probably out fanboi anyone around about The National...and I haven't even been able to get through the album.
'Sometimes I Don't Think' is my favourite new song of theirs. They just didn't release it.
But I'm also just fucking sad all the time lately. So whatever. Fuck it.
"Oh, you wouldn't want an angel watching over
Surprise, surprise, they wouldn't wanna watch
Another un-innocent, elegant fall
Into the un-magnificent lives of adults"
Can't top this!
I, for one, share a similar sentiment to Ryan–toocooltoanswerhisemails–Leas. And have previously enjoyed his writing–especially on 'Skeleton Tree'.
I look forward to hearing the album as a whole, but haven't been going back to listen to any of these singles yet.
I'd imagine it has something to do with how religious a majority are. Trying to smear politicians as atheists apparently works in the US. Whereas in the UK the people don't tend to be religious and they are pretty skeptical of all their politicians.
But this is probably a big generalization. I'm just trying to answer your–probably rhetorical–question.
After todays events, bah, it's a frustrating and sad state.
