Nice to see Ol' Crazy Eye & The Wank-Rabbits are still keeping at the music thing.
Don't Cry Robin Pecknold is going to be the name of my new band.
Oh fuck off NME. I'm British but I can say with great confidence that British music has never been cooler than American music. The 60s is the only possible exception, although some would argue that 60s era Dylan out-cools both the Beatles and the Stones combined. In the past 20 years there's been no competition from this side of the Atlantic. Oh no wait....Kaiser Chiefs. Yeah, THEY were good. Ha.
You care too much. Music criticism and review is pretty much solely based on comparison, no band or artist will ever escape it. Your best chance is to disregard it. And I'd have thought that the sheer number of people who consider your self-titled their album of the year would be enough to spur you onto album #2, no? P.S. He Doesn't Know Why sounds sickeningly like Jonas Brothers.
Smokey sucked balls hardcore style. About two good songs on the whole album, the rest was yawn-inducing. And come on, the guys nauseatingly pretentious. Nino Rojo is the only really good thing he's done. This video made me want to throttle him with his beads.
"the wonderful world of the media" the guy is obviously deluded. he isn't intelligent and in this case I would side with the Bloc Party guy. They're both knobheads though. That's what's important here. They're both knobheads.
I've found, to my surprise that me and Courtney Love agree one two things: 1.Rock N Roll is a shitty album, especially by RA's standards 2. Mark Lanegan rocks. And it's ridiculous that she isn't aware of the Gutter Twins, otherwise she'd know what he's up to. She's too fucking smacked off her head, that's what's wrong. Also her daughter looks like a fat little bitch and there's no way she was starved. End.
I listen to his new stuff and more recent Bright Eyes and the guys talent is pretty clear in many songs. But then I watch videos like this and see he's really nothing but an irritating little manboy.
nice offer, but I think I'll stick to the full leak thanks.
Are you aware that other music exists beside pop? Yes, Michael Jackson is quite obviously a million times better than all today's "popstars", but please - 'the only living legend'? Google 'Dylan' and read.
I'm amused and saddened that you listed Tabloid Junkie and Scream, two of the man's worst ever songs, as examples of why he's "King of Music". Do you even like music?
lol - hardcore MJ fans seem so out of touch. here's a good joke I heard - how do you know when it's bedtime at Michael Jackson's house? ......when he shoves his cock in a child's asshole. On a lighter note, I do believe the guy will always own the title of King of Pop for what he did during the 70s and 80s. This song sounds alright, whether or not the new album will be worth listening to remains to be seen. I'm happy enough to give it praise if deserved.
proof that you DON'T need to be musically gifted to be a rapper. tonedeaf people all over the world are rejoicing.
Jon Bon Jovi > Axl Rose
hope she dies pretty soon.
this world will be a much better place when people realize that LEGEND by BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS is a fucking GREATEST HITS COMPILATION. It has no place in an albums list. Rolling Stone also stupidly included it in their Top 500 Albums list in 2003.
Aimee's new album is great. The Forgotten Arm was my favourite album of 2005 and will always be my favourite Aimee Mann album. I was never expecting Smilers to blow me away ever since I heard the "more keyboard, no guitars" plan. But it's pleasantly surprised me. The songs still stand up great, especially Freeway, Pheonix and Ballentines. Nice job yet again Ms Mann.
I'd like to second the question about your software/hardware recommendations.
hi there! I illegally downloaded your new album from the World Wide Web when it came out - actually, it was maybe slightly BEFORE the release date? Anyway, what are your thoughts on this type of activity? Like it? Hate it? Also, I'm sure you're aware of the craziness that went on in the underworld of the blogosphere in regards to the constant stream of fake Narrow Stairs that were distributed. Were the band involved in this, or did you get any enjoyment out of watching the pirates squirm? Thanks!! PS - just to clarify, I HAVE ordered the album from a legal website, and paid for it in legal tender since I downloaded it. I usually download first, then buy if I like it. I have physical copies of all DCFC albums and am not planning to stop here. Well done on the new songs.
I hate retracted comments. And I'm pretty sure anyone who disagreed with the Waters/Starr comment in the first place is an idiot. I think it's a ridiculous idea. Maybe James Iha could tour Siamese Dream or Danny Lohner could take The Downward Spiral on the road.
Yeah I don't really dig these Black Cab sessions. It seems like a decent idea on paper, but it doesn't really work. Like someone already said, it's like a poor man's la blogotheque.
she's looking more and more like Gillian Welch the longer she hangs out with him.
Hip hop is "still evolving"? Sorry Jigga, don't think so. Hip hop has been saying nothing for at least the last decade. If I may quote Nasir Jones' insignificant 2006 effort, "Hip Hop is Dead". Although I'd rather see a Jigga set than an Oasis set.
I lol'd at how they're desperately trying to pioneer all this "Maaaan....this modern music scene is all wrooonng...whatever happened to hanging out at record stores and buying actual cds? Why are we all on the internet now, doooood?" Maybe cause no one wants to get ripped off an extortionate amount of money for a shitty band like Metallica who spew out shitty albums like St Anger, when we can just download it at home, realise how bad it is, and delete it without ever funding their piss-poor efforts.
That performance as a whole was weak. It looked almost like an M.Ward gig where he'd brought a nervous, self-conscious fan onstage to sing a song. The record is actually alright, but her voice is never going to blow any minds.
that's a cool song - maybe the best on Accelerate (I know most people won't think that's saying much, but I like the album). Great video too. REM have pleasantly surprised me this year. Great tits too.
awful sounding record judging from the tracks I've heard so far. Even David Bowie won't be able to save this mess. Just a pity she had a soil Mr. Waits wonderful songs with it. Excellent tits, though.
That's the most disgusting album artwork I've seen since Mayhem's 'Dawn of the Black Hearts'.
I'm assuming Ryan means contemporary country when he says he hates country music? He's cited Gram Parson enough times as one of his major influences, so he obviously appreciates early alt. country. And what are more recent songs like Tears of Gold and Pearls on a String if not country? They're the closest thing to country music he's done, and there's really very little "alt" about them. Also, I thought he said (quite a while ago) that he was joking when he picked Jay-Z and Nas and shit for his celebrity iTunes playlist? And yet there are pictures of him on his blog with rap albums where he genuinely seems to like them. I think Ryan intentionally contradicts himself in the media and in interviews so people will never know exactly who he is or where his interests lie. I'm pretty skeptical about most of his stuff on tumblr - hard to know if it's the real Ryan Adams talking or not.
I agree K. Without a doubt he was my favourite singer/songwriter in the world 2 or 3 years ago. But his last few releases have been lazy and....well, just not great at all. This song is unbelievably bad. Of course, someone else may think this is the best thing he's done in his career, but personally, I fear that Nuclear Daydream may well be the last great release we see from Joseph Arthur. A real shame that he seems to have gone down this road.
don't worry Stereogum. Keep up the good work and maybe you'll be on a par with this someday in terms of journalistic skills.
the fact that you're aggressively defending the Editors leads me to believe you have your fair share of "shitty" songs on your own ipod. Don't worry about me.
If I recall correctly, I only said it once. But here's another one, just for you sweetheart: "they say a good song is only a good song if it can be stripped down to basics and still sound good." did it do anything for you that time?
Stereogum, you should just fucking delete this post. To take the guys words out of context just cause you want to portray him in a certain light is just unfair and unprofessional. Better yet, why not post an apology? Maybe for your lack of journalistic skills?
they say a good song is only a good song if it can be stripped down to basics and still sound good. This video just shows how shitty that song really is.
yeah I know Pride was pretty well jizzed-over in the blogosphere last year, but it's still amazing how many people (even blog-regulars) haven't heard of Phosphorescent. 'Overlooked' was the wrong word I suppose.
You show me a band who can do 5-part harmonies as closely and perfectly as the Eagles can. Yet another band teenage hipsters love to shit over just because your dad loved them. And when it comes to playing live, even today they beat the shit out of these indie clown-acts who spend their days trying to out-weird each other.
He got through a whole two sentences there without sounding like a twat.
Corgan just said that bands need to come up with new gimmicks in order to sell records. He isn't excluding Pumpkins from that, where does he say that his band are any different? He said "the only way to make it work is I've got to come up with a gimmick". So if you (apparently top-class) interviewers were conducting this, you'd have asked; "So if you're so true to your art and what the kids want, why did you let Best Buy and Target milk fans for special edition Zeitgeists?" To which he'd probably have replied - "Because the only way to make it work is I've got to come up with a gimmick. Are you Stereogum fucks deaf?!"
