That makes three singles from What's Goin On (none which got to #1) with a 10 score. All deserved. Not many albums can claim that.
First listen and I'm disappointed after a pretty remarkable run. I love Grim Reaper, Tomboy and Person Pitch. I miss the head bobbing jams.
Man, that "Seconds" cover is completely bad ass.

I spent the winter on the verge of a total breakdown while living in Norway. I felt the darkness of the black metal bands.
Nah, Crazy Frog is for 8 year olds. Blue Da Ba Bee is fun in a harmless, catchy way.
Same here. I gave this a bunch of listens back when it came out. I must have downloaded it off of one of the old mp3 blogs. I got bored with it after a few months and deleted it. It was pleasant enough but didn't have any staying power. Surprised to see it given an anniversary write up.
He's like Fred Rogers with an acoustic guitar. At least Mr Rogers was performing for kids. This is the shit that inspired Blutowski to grab that guitar and smash it against the wall.
Misleading headline. She clearly knew she had a hit song in Japan. The claims she never heard it before, but I find that doubtful.
Guilded Palace of Sin is so great. I like it better than Sweetheart of the Rodeo.
Corgan has turned himself into a punching bag over the last 20 years, but Gish and Siamese Dream are untouchable and I've never heard anyone say otherwise. It's like making fun of Ozzy Osbourne but everyone knows the early Sabbath records are sacred. Maybe we'll get a Billy Corgan reality show one day where he mumbles around the kitchen as well.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays the Bowie character as such a timid, apprehensive guy overwhelmed by McGregor's version of Iggy. In my mind Bowie projects such confidence that it rings untrue as a biopic. I haven't read much about Bowie so maybe that's how he was when he first came to America.
This is like a bad NIN cover and the original song isn't that great to begin with. The Pumpkins version kicks ass because Billy Corgan sells the hell out of it with his snarling vocals. Karen O is better than this.
In the late 90's, my apartment complex only had access to some cheap ass cable package with no MTV but it had Canada's MUCH Music instead. The Backstreet Boys were huge on there for at least a year if not longer before they broke on MTV and America. I think the "Backstreet's back" thing was from it being on their new album at the time.
I love Astral Weeks and Nick Drake and agree with Tom on Carole King and Tapestry. Never been a fan. There's something about it I just don't care for. I'll pass on Joni Mitchell as well although I'm sure that opinion is less popular.
Never heard this song before, however, I recognize it from the Avalanches. Wildflower is a great record. It definitely still gets replays at my house. "Because I'm Me" is a jam. "Noisy Eater" is stupid, though and I"m not a fan of "Frankie Sinatra" either. "If I was a Folkstar" and "Saturday Night Inside Out" are both perfect.
Nice call Gabriella. I’m drinking a Lagunitus now!
HH sounds like fucking worship music. I'm embarassed for anyone driving down the road with the windows down singing along to this tripe. I'm a fan of VW and have gone to see them live. I generally like everything they've done but that song is lame.
Ha, I was a regular commenter there as well and bailed after Kinja as well.
I know it's my OCD is kicking in, but I can't believe the photographer let the brother on the right keep his right hand out of his armpit.
Young Liars is the best EP of the aughts.
Hot take time. Dave Newfeld was the most important member of BSS. I know Forgiveness Rock Record and Hug of Thunder have their fans, and they're decent albums but fall far below the quality of YFIIP and their s/t. Watching this pretty listless version of "Ibi Dreams of Pavement" further cements my opinion. The production on those classic albums did A LOT of the heavy lifting.
Jason Collett's album Idols of Exile from 2005 that this song is from is excellent. I saw him open for Feist touring Let it Die back in this time period and picked up his album shortly after. It's from peak BSS era and has a lot of similar sounds but it's also a lot more country/Americana influenced. Great songwriting and a solid album.
Funny, I'm very familiar with their music and I found this interview exhausting. My eyes rolled pretty hard several times.
The worst part about Phish, and Widespread Panic for that matter are their fans. I'm in my 40's and went to the University of Georgia in the 90's. It's insane how many people I knew from college that still only listen to Phish and Widespread and get so excited to go see them every chance they get. They seriously only listen to this same music for the past 25 years of their lives. It drives me nuts.
"For Your Life" is awesome.
Sunbathing Animal will likely be in my top 10 of the decade. To me, the past two are also great but have lost a little something. The songwriting and production have tightened up, but the charm and "slackerness" of songs like "Instant Dissassembly" and "She's Rolling" are what made them great to me. The Pavement comparisons were spot on with "Stoned and Starving" but they've moved a lot closer to Elvis Costello type stuff lately.
The Guess Who had a handful of decent tunes like "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature", "No Time", "These Eyes", "Undun". That said, this song blows.
Every time he posts about how close he is and is just finishing up remastering I get pissed thinking about how he posted the same thing 5 years ago. Or was it 10 years ago. I've lost count. I seriously used to get so excited hanging on every word he wrote about how close the new album was. Now it annoys me. That bridge he released was incredible, though.
Surprised no mention of "Thank you for taking me to Africa" which turns the joyous original into a claustrophobic, paranoid dirge in all the best ways.
Surprised Lush didn't make the top 10. That was my choice.
I wanted to like their "I Want Your Love" but it really sort of sucks. Whenever LCD gets into their groove it's pretty good regardless of what they're singing about so it's not terrible. But they somehow lose the charm and sexiness of "I Want Your Love." It's too fast and the original badass bassline gets lost. It doesn't deserve to be on the "worst" list but it's nothing great either.
My wife listened to Beach House with me for years and it blew her mind when I referred to the singer as a girl. She thought I was lying.
I had no idea. The original is amazing, holy crap. It's so spacious and haunting. The drums are badass.
"Pinegrove announced their retirement amid fears of sexual harassment after several female fans attempted to meet the guys after a show. "
Baseball is much more cinematic than football. Like boxing, there's so much drama you can pull from one on one matchups. Football has too much going on, with too many players involved to translate to iconic moments in film.
