Honestly, looks like it was a pretty damn good show overall this year.
Fuck yes that women of country medley was FIRE.
Song is beautiful, artwork is incredible.
Whole new Liturgy album, surprise-dropped this morning! The Gum ain't mentioned it yet.
Are we pretending Liturgy never happened? Because that was the biggest metal-indie-crossover second only to Deafheaven. Will we get a Black Market decade retrospective? I hope so, because Carcass...Gorguts...Power Trip...Tomb Mold...Horrendous...so on and so forth. Also, thought you might throw Billie Eilish on here somewhere, but I guess that's the music of the future.
His voice is just such a big, warm, comforting, theatrically satanic security blanket.
I have jammed that Halford record already (I usually try to wait until at least near the end of November before starting in on the Christmas tunes) and it is a blast.
Who is doing all this downvoting?
Gucci is the GBV of trap. I listen to everything he does, forget over half of it, love the shit out of what I do remember. Rinse and repeat about every 6 months.
Nilufer Yanya and SASAMI are two of my favorites this year. Mdou Moctar is pretty highly rated as well, and I really dig Black Midi, DaBaby, Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Nas X, and Slowthai to varying degrees. I'll be spinning the playlist this afternoon for sure.
So much new stuff out today, plus great archival stuff (Coltrane, Abbey Road, the Dead, and this). Can't wait to hear this but it might be next week before I get there!
Not sure where to leave this comment (now that Album Of The Week is probably too far down the feed to drop it there) but new albums by Kevin Gates and Kool Keith (second of the year) out today...did those ever get mentioned 'round these parts?
"Dark Star" is responsible for my finally growing to love the Dead in the last couple of years. Go on, Robert. Pour your light into ashes. "Dark star crashes, pouring its light into ashes. Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis. Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion. Shall we go, you and I while we can Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?"
Also, quick shout-out for the Merzcast, which was actually really freaking cool. It's now called Noisextra though I haven't made it to those episodes yet.
Ah, that's right! I did see this. Thank you. You're doing the lorde's work.
This reminds me...I was hoping the somewhat amusing Merzbow/Merzcast non-troversy from a few months back might get at least a passing mention from the ol’ Gum at some point.
I’m curious if this The Rita’s first ever Stereogum mention?
This hits me like a brick. I was just thinking about him earlier this week (wasn't even listening to his music at that moment, just thinking about the guy). I hope at the end he went out knowing he was loved.
Those actual (and physical) sales numbers are just freaking IMPRESSIVE.
Okay, admittedly didn't have time to read this review yesterday, so was not prepared for the opening track to be a re-imagining of the Highwaymen's "Highwayman". A very powerful, timely take at that. I was floored. The rest of the album has a lot to live up to, and I'm digging it and I think it'll be a slow-burner for me the rest of the year.
Definitely untrue. Hell, I can get you a crack band of all women in Nashville by 3 o'clock this afternoon, with nail polish.
Wrote this comment while on the john at work. Forgive my typos.
It’s solid AF. It needs more listens. I am happy to give it more listens.
Dixie Chicks rule and even as a rural TN raised teenager doing my best to buck the prevailing country music culture of my hometown I couldn’t help but love ‘em. My wife and I were listening to Kacey’s “Space Cowboy” I’m the car the other day and I said “man, I just want to hear Dixie Chicks right now” and out on “Cowboy Take Me Away”, noting that the album would turn 20 this year. Had no idea it was literally this week. Hell yeah.
Correct, but Slipknot somewhat inexplicably feature two auxiliary percussionists in addition to their main drummer (and a DJ, and a sampler/keyboardist...go figure). Jay Weinberg replaced Joey Jordison, Tortilla Man replaced Chris what's-his-Pinnochio-face (hey, I know some Slipknot facts but not every detail).
Well, damn. I like this a lot more than I could have possibly anticipated.
Whoa I noticed that too. Interesting swipe.
Nothing laughable about an album like "Undeceived" by Extol. I know there are other metalheads on this site (and they may or may not even be Christians) who will back me up on this.
NF is way bigger than most folks realize (well, I guess they're all currently realizing). I'm not a huge fan, but I've been saying Christian rap is having a surprising moment for a couple of years now. The main factor in its current success and what separates it from the cheesy Christian rap of yesteryear (the dcTalks and whatnot; GRITS had some jams) is that it's a relevant voice and at odds with mainstream Evangelicalism. Lecrae is a great example - "All Things Work Together" was legitimately one of my favorite albums of 2017, and he did a killer mixtape last year with Zaytoven producing - though for my money the best Christian rapper working right now is the even more outspoken and socially progressive Propaganda.
I’m gonna be “that guy” and wait to listen until the whole thing is up, “Yi” included. I’m giddy with excitement though.
Well, I guess I'll need to clear out another little corner of my AOTY list for this.
Worth pointing out that while Islamophobia is a right wing phenomenon, Islamist extremism is itself a form of right wing extremism.
Doesn’t know what “double down” means, they said.
Nah, sorry, too busy streaming the entire Tool discography, which, based on Drake's last couple "playlists/mixtapes/whatever", is probably about the same length.
