Anyone fuck with Ekulu? Their last album really scratched an itch that Power Trip used to.
Great choices, everyone. My favorite song this year is "La Perla" by Sofia Kourtesis. Close #2 is Mdou Moctar's "Tala Tannam." I think I found myself gravitating toward the slow, hypnotic grooves a little above average this year.
This is great. Anyone else getting Welcome Interstate Managers-era Fountains of Wayne vibes? Some serious/fun hooks.
I genuinely love everything up through and including Post-War... which I'm now realizing came out 15 years ago.
This is exactly the track I needed this afternoon.
I can already hear the extended outro during the live set with Adam's soaring lead guitar.
RIP to one of the most underrated songwriters. So much respect for this guy.
I agree. That record is really fuggin' good.
Interesting to read your take on the weekend, Ryan. A close friend of mine who goes every year was just lamenting about how disappointed he was compared to previous years -- and specifically mentioned the lack of percussion. Though, Andrew Bird and Margo duetting on "Oh Sister" had to have been a perfect moment.
For the guitar nerds out there, Dave Harrington did a Guitar Power video with true head Matt Sweeney a few years back. The dude is a total sorcerer and has complete command over the instrument for what he does with it. A really incredible musician. I won't post a link because that's kind of annoying here, but an easy Google search will land you right there.
Sirens is absolutely incredible. AAL and its deep-house sensibilities just really makes me wanna go to a Nico DJ set.
I'm envious of anyone digging into Psychic for the first time after reading this.
Slave Ambient gang here, but I would agree working backwards is a good way to dive in.
I was trying to pin down what it reminded me of -- that's absolutely it. "Hell is Chrome"?
Me: I am ready. [Narrator: He was not ready]
I still listen to Tarot Sport regularly which is probably my favorite, but definitely agree that Street Horrrsing hits differently.
I'll agree with that. Perhaps my point is more that I like how it can still sound distinctly Deafheaven when some of the obvious markers (i.e. aggressively emotional vocals) are missing. Anyone else think Kerry's guitar movement and melodic sense is particularly early-AFI sounding on this?
We'll always have Sunbather as a near-perfect record. I do dig this track, though, and the guitar sound is still signature Kerry McCoy.
Scrolling through that list... how did I miss their collab with Dungen? That may have been the winter I spent living under a rock.
New Gunner is always welcome. Really liking the mix on this too. Wonder if "Circuit Rider" is an homage to a band of the same name.
