When you're a rock superstar, you can play wherever you want.
I'm with you. It's a small, subtle album, but something about it feels comforting and special. Kind of like it's always been a secret album by a huge artist (partly due to how it was first released) which feels fun to me. It feels like Thom's album specifically for solitude listening. Probably just my own feeling. It's certainly not his best, but it's still a great record.
I know what you mean. I only have two albums of theirs, and I wouldn't put them in my top 10 bands or anything, but for some reason, this is really hitting me hard today. I think this is the first time I actually cried over a death of a celebrity. Bought some scotch that I'm sipping on now, and poured out some for Scott in my front yard. Seemed appropriate. I've had "Painting of a Panic Attack" on most of the night. "Die Like A Rich Boy"particularly hurts.
Well written. Thank you.
That is super interesting. I find it amazing that on top of all the sketches, they also have time to make this thing as well.
I hope this story has a happy ending and he's just eating gelato somewhere, having not checked his phone in a bit. Stay with us, Scott.
Is anyone else still amazed that that "Do what you want with my body" song he did with Lady Gaga was made at all?
How is Tom Waits - Bawlers not listed? I feel like I saw tons of Brawlers and Bastards but very few Bawlers. I just assumed it was because that was the one people wanted, but I suppose the store just didn't get any or something.
NICE. Glad you're still posting about them. Their sound hasn't changed much throughout the years, but what they do, they do well.
I wish they would do more 7"s of two bands covering each other's songs. I remember that Beck/Sonic Youth one from 2008 (2009?) was wonderful. I miss those kinds of releases.
Cannot wait for this record. I'm surprised I'm as excited for Belly to return as I am.
Since you guys posted the article about how much JW's new album sucks, why are you posting this video? Shouldn't you find music that you'd want people to actually hear? Is it just because you know you'll get clicks with this content? Is it because some staff members disagree with the article you posted earlier? Not trying to be argumentative, but I'm honestly curious why you would bash an album and then still post about it.
"Reliving the past is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend the present." Sure it can be fun, but I highly disagree with this little sentiment.
This is a bit far past the roll out.
The last few Eels albums have seemed kind of "Eels by numbers" in a way, but something about these new ones sound a bit more inspired. They still sound very eels-y, but something about them feels a bit more....earnest, maybe? Maybe they're just better songs overall. Either way, sounds great. Really love the atmospheric sounds on this one.
Does anyone remember when RSD used to be tons of fun? I have very fond memories of back in 2008 and 2009 when all the releases seemed to be of bands covering each other, releasing exclusive songs found no where else, and mostly consisting of non-reissue stuff. For the past 7 years or so I feel like it's mostly just boring live albums, double a-sides from upcoming albums, or reissues of bands who music is more than readily available all over. I know someone says something like this every year, but man, that list particularly looks just....boring. I miss being excited about RSD.
I still consider this one of my top 20 favorite albums of all time. I think it still sounds timeless.
Even if it's annoying to not have your phone for this or that reason, I must say, I can't really argue that sans phones is usually a better experience in a lot of cases. I kind of feel like this is the same issue as when people were pirating music more. It seems like we all know it's a "wrong" thing to do but it's just so easy we keep doing it. Or maybe not, what do I know.
There is not an ounce of opinion about the song or band in that post.
That's a pretty sweet song.
Yeah but come on, Dylan (for example) is considered one of the best artists of all time, and he has some albums that are complete jokes. Even ones that he released that were purposefully bad (allegedly), yet after pretty much one "bad" single off this new record, Stereogum is quick to say "JT isn't good anymore". Just not a fan of this culture of instant judgement, is all. I know they spoke about how the 20/20 experience was fine, and the other movie singles were fine, but still, overall they're saying he's bad because of this song.
a cassette player, probs
I guess we just can't let artists explore anymore.
Is it me, or does Brody look exactly like Maria Bamford in that photo?
I feel like they've been kind of pushed to the side in terms of the global indie conversation in the last few years, but they're still a pretty solid and consistent band. Painting Of A Panic Attack is very, very underrated, imo.
Ugh, both versions are so beautiful. I'm sure he works hard, but he makes being a musician seem really easy.
Just FYI, "All Hail West Texas" is a 2002 album, not a 2000 album. Not to be that guy, but just letting you know.
I doubt they feel they need to be pigeon holed like that. I think I saw in an interview a while ago they just explained that music videos were another way they liked to make cool stuff.
Sorry their cool thing annoyed you
From what I understand, they now team up with companies to help fund the money to produce the videos, rather than producing them all by themselves. Makes sense financially.
Ed is Radiohead's secret secret weapon (with Jonny being their secret weapon) and I am pumped for this. Anyone listen to that "7 Worlds Collide" record from a few years ago? The songs Ed was apart of on that were killer. Hope this comes out well. After this, all we need is a Colin record and then we'll have something solo for each of the lil' guys.
Just FYI, you call it "The Hilarious World..." in the title and then in the first sentence you call it "The Wonderful World...."
Honestly, I've only recently come to the Rentals with "Lost in Alphaville" which is a fantastic, fantastic piece of art. When I went and listened to their first couple, I couldn't get into them for whatever reason.
I actually thought Lost in Alphaville was their best by far.
I'm just glad the kid who played Will gets to be in the "Stranger Things kids" group this time around. I felt bad for him since the first season is all about him, but he was hardly in it and hardly part of "the group".
Kind of surprised they didn't have "Lotus" on this list. Love that song.
